Temporary teachers in Nepal had been protesting unequal pay compared to permanent teachers. The Ministry of Education agreed to pay temporary teachers equally and release increased salaries before a major holiday. They also agreed to urge the Ministry of Finance to allocate salaries for administrative school staff. Several teachers' associations withdrew protests following this two-point agreement between union representatives and the Education Minister.

1. Temporary teachers and ministry of Education reach deal for equal pay
A majority of teachers associations withdrew their protests on Wednesday after the Ministry of
Education agreed to pay them salary equal to their permanent colleagues.
A meeting of the three teachers’ associations and the a government team led by Education
Minister Chitra Lekha Yadav on Tuesday evening reached a two-point agreement paving the
way to end the ongoing protests.
According to the agreement, the Ministry of Education will release the increased salary of all
temporary teachers before Dashain and urge the Ministry of Finance (MoF) to allocate the salary
for the administrative staffs at schools. Around half of dozen teachers’ association had launched
a series of protests after the MoF on September 18 decided not to release the increased salary to
teachers working on temporary, contract and relief quota basis and to administrative staffers of
schools.
“We have decided to withdraw the protests following the agreement,” said Lal Bahadur BC,
chairman of the All Nepal National Teachers Association close to UCPN (Maoist). The
protesting unions had padlocked account sections of 75 District Education Offices and were
picketing in the Department of Education. The Temporary Teachers’ Struggle Commitee,
however, has said that the ministry reached the agreement without its consent.
The government through the budget speech this year had hiked the salary of all the government
employees by 10 percent along with the monthly allowance of Rs 1,000. But the MoF was not in
favour of releasing the increased salary to 50,000 temporary teachers.
Earlier, the MoF had also refused to provide uniform allowance to temporary teachers and the
university employees.
