1. One teacher for grades one to seven
Here is a school where students of Grade I to VII have to squeeze themselves in one room and
they are taught by only one teacher. Headteacher Bhoj Dev Mandal of Sharada Lower Secondary
School in Gobargada VDC is the only teacher who has been teaching all the students for the last
eight months.
So what he does is gets students of Grade I to VII in one classroom. The school till 2008
reportedly had three teachers when it was only a primary level institution. But when it became
lower secondary school the following year, the number of teachers came down to two. After
school principal Manoj Nayak Mandal retired in July, Bhoj Dev is the only one left to take care
of the students.
Indra Dev Yadav, a local, said, “Children usually return home from the school in the afternoon
as they don’t have full and regular classes.
”Guardians and parents are worried that the school would be shut if the only teacher Bhoj Dev
takes leave.
Yadav said a new teacher was recommended by the Teachers’ Service Commission, but he is yet
to attend the school. “But adding one more teacher will not be of much help,” he said. “Due to
lack of teachers, classes of grade VIII are yet to be managed. This is the only school in the VDC
and there are no schools nearby.
District Education Officer Laxmi Prasad Bhattarai said the process to he appoint new teachers
was halted due to the second Constitution Assembly elections. But it has been around three
months since the elections, teachers are yet to be appointed. “We will send new teachers soon,”
he assured.
