This document provides information about telling time on both analog and digital clocks: - When the long hand is at 12, the short hand indicates the hour, called "on the hour." - At quarter past, half past, and quarter to the hour, the long hand is positioned accordingly between numbers on the clock face. - Duration is defined as how long something lasts, such as the time taken to complete a task. Duration is calculated by subtracting the finish time from the start time. - The 24 hour clock counts hours from 00:00 to 23:59 and is commonly used in the military and other fields. It represents times as "hundred" instead of am/pm, such as 07:00

When the long hand is at 12, the short
hand will always be directly on a number.
This is called “ on the hour”. If the long
hand is on 12 and the short hand on 3, it
is 3 o’clock on an analog clock or 3:00 on
a digital clock. Note the times on the
analog and digital clocks.

When the long hand is at 3, 6 or 9 we say
the time differently for the analog clock
but it is the same for the digital clock.
When the long hand is at 3, we say a
quarter past the hour.

past the hour.
The time on the clock is half past 1.
Notice that the hour

Duration is how long something lasts,
from beginning to end. A duration might
be long, such as the duration of a lesson
in class, or short, as the duration of
putting on your socks and shoes.

19. The 24 Clock
Have you ever wondered how to read military time (or
astronomical time), quickly and easily? Or even
wondered what it was, or why it exists?
It is based on a 24 hour clock, and is a method of
keeping hours in which the day runs from midnight to
midnight and is divided into 24 hour increments. It is
the most commonly used interval notation in the world.

The day starts at midnight and is written as 00:00.
The last minute of the day is written as 23:59, or one minute
before the next midnight.
Sometimes you may see 00:00 written as 24:00. Both are
acceptable. Look at the example table below, showing the 12 hour
clock vs military time.
On the time table, it shows 4:00 pm for regular time and 1600
(sixteen hundred) for military time.

This method of keeping time is most commonly used by the military,
government, public transportation, hospitals, meteorologists, those
employed in emergency services, and also with computers.
When speaking in military time, 07:00 may be stated as “zero seven
hundred” or “oh seven hundred”. Also, in the military, these time stamps
are often written without the colon, so 07:52 would rather be written
0752.
