How to Tell TimeMs. Leonard’s ClassOctober 27, 2009
What a Clock Looks LikeClocks have two hands, a big hand and a small hand.
The big hand tells time in minutes.
The small hand tells time in hours. What Do the Numerals Mean?A clock has twelve numerals, 1-12.
Each one represents five minutes.
Twelve numerals x 5 minutes means that there are 60 minutes in one hour.Past or to the Hour?If the minute hand is in the red region, it means that time is being told past the hour (the hour just started).
If the minute hand is in the green region, time is being told to the hour (a new hour is approaching). How the Clock WorksThe clock can be split into quarters and halves. If the big hand points at the 6, 30 minutes has passed (half of 60).If the big hand points at the 3, 15 minutes has passed (half of 30).30 minutes has passed15 minutes has passed
How the Clock Works ContinuedIf the big hand is at the 9, 45 minutes has passed (30 minutes + 15 more since it’s another quarter hour).
