iPod Apps
In the last four years there has
been changes in technology, especially in
the use of the iPod for integrating this
technology into the classroom. The iPod
can be creatively used to help students
master reading and writing especially for
English-language learners. Students can
record and listen to readings to improve
their skills; while teachers can then mark
on worksheets the pace, accuracy, and
expression of each student’s reading
(Chen 2010). There are many more uses
of the iPod in the classroom
BrainPops
BrainPops is a technology tool
that can be used across the curriculum to
support educators and engage students.
This is a animated resource that came be
used in school, at home, and on mobile
devices. The content includes movies,
quizzes, games, activity pages and covers
hundreds of topics. These topics include
Math, Science, Social Studies, English,
Technology, Art and Music, and Health
(BrainPop 2017).

4. From Theory to Practice
In a Media Specialist classroom in Union City, New Jersey (Stransbury
2009) iPods was implemented for the following activities;
• Listening to songs for grammar excises that have repeated phrases
and patterns and specific types of adjectives and verb
• Appropriate subjects that students can discuss after the exercise
• Grammar activities such as:
grammatical patterns word banks matching
Organizing lyrics in strips theme-related activities Open-ended
questions
spelling and rearranging letters figurative language
activities
• All activities are tailored for each student’s different skill levels.

5. Implementing & Tailoring for
Students Needs
Advanced to Intermediate Students
Sequencing Exercise
• Using lyrics line by line and cutting each line into strips
and putting the strips in sequential order.
Unscrambling Letters
• Watching a music video and using a worksheet where
some of the lyrics were scrambled
Grammar Exercise
• Using songs and a fill in the blank worksheet students
must use the correct form of the progressive verb
(Stransbury 2009)

• Songs that relate only to a particular subject area use The
Green Book of Songs and Subjects
• Receive for iPods or iPhones during Apple’s free music
Tuesdays
• For grammar, history, geography, and math songs visit Audio

These short animated movies offer quizzes and related materials
covering the subjects of Science, Social Studies, English,
Mathematics, Engineering and Technology, Health, and Art &
Music (Word finder n.d.)

12. A Sensory Perception Tool
“Kids who have deficits in learning generally have a difficult time
understanding, so if you add in Brainpop, they’re using several
different aspects of sensory perception” (Wordnick n.d.)

13. BrainPop’s
Audio & Visual Tools
• As an educational fee-based website BrainPop uses mostly pictures and
graphics that give the learner many different ways to understand the
topics being presented
• The pictures and graphs are clear, which support and facilitate learning
• Vocabulary and terms are displayed for all clips
• Closed caption is available for hearing and reading text
• Text and audio uses daily conversational style verses formal language
• Audio quality is high and easy to hear (Brainpop Web Evaluation n.d.)

• All materials are aligned to state education standards
• Most videos feature the characters Tim and Moby (Brainpop

• The character Tim is human and Moby is his robot friend
• Explanations are done in a way to keep the learner interested
• Tim helps to guide the learning process and his robot friend
Moby provides the funny side to the lesson by acting silly this
keeps the learner engaged (Brainpop Web Evaluation n.d.)

• Brainpop has a search engine that is easy to use
• The search engine allows the learner to easily find any topic
and sites are divided by subject matter
• All the sites have bright colored graphic images that help
capture the learners attention (Brainpop Web Evaluation n.d.)

BrainPOP is used in more that 20% of the schools in the
United States
BrainPOP offers subscriptions for families and
homeschoolers
BrainPOP is also used in schools in Mexico, the United
Kingdom, Israel, France, Spain and several other countries
BrainPOP offers videos in local languages that are designed
for students in those countries (Word finder n.d.)

• You can access BrainPOP by subscription
• There are some free content including a movie of the day,
several free movies from each topic areas, educator materials
including lesson plans and an extensive library of educational
games called GameUP
• BrainPOP has free smartphone and tablet application (Word
