TECHNOLOGIES FOR
DISTANCE EDUCATION
By Samari Watts
TECHNOLOGIES
Technology is most noticeable used to promote
communication
Communication occurs when two or more individuals
wish to share ideas
Communication in distance education occurs when
learners interact with each other and the instructor
Language and culture and two thing in common that
communication and communication for distance
education have in common
COMMUNICATION MODE
To communicate accurately instructional ideas
are encoded into some transmittable form, such
as spoken words, pictures and writing.
Effective communication must require an
active audience and media is used to
communicate to distant learners and the
messages must be decoded
TAXONOMY OF DISTANCE
EDUCATION TECHNOLOGIES
In distance education it is vital that educators think
about how communication can occur and how to apply
experiences so it can promote effective and efficient
learning.
Several different methods can be used to show the
experiences to students
Correspondence study: longest and simplest form of
distance education
Prerecorded Media: incorporation of media into
correspondence study system
TAXONOMY OF DISTANCE
EDUCATION TECHNOLOGIES
Two-way audio: first widely used form of
distance education
Two-way audio with graphics: an
embellishment of the two-way audio form
One-way live video: Referred to as broadcast
distance education.
TAXONOMY OF DISTANCE
EDUCATION TECHNOLOGIES
Two-way audio, one-way video: telephone
system with 800 number
 Two-way audio/video: normally called the
compressed video often used in conference
calls
Desktop two-way audio/video: multimedia
computer, camera, microphone, high-speed
network connection
CATEGORIES OF DESKTOP AUDIO
AND VIDEO
Analog systems are using telephone wiring in
buildings that are called twisted- pair wires.
High-speed is defined as the video signal that
is compressed using a compression protocol.
In today’s current society we use medium
speed the most due to the fact that it is
compressed over the internet. The speed of it is
128,000 to 256,000 bits per second
CLASSROOM TECHNOLOGIES USED
FOR ONLINE INSTRUCTION
An important asset to having a successful
online classroom is not technology but how it is
utilized.
When choosing appropriate technologies for
online instruction students must assess the
available instructional technologies. Also they
have to determine the learning outcomes,
identify learning experiences and match each to
the most appropriate and available technology
INTERNET-BASED TECHNOLOGY
There are several different versions of web-based technology.
In the early 2000’s a new generation of web applications. Web
2.0 technologies are:
Blogging
Wikis
Podcasting
Social bookmarking
Social networking
Virtual words
SUMMARY
Technologies used for distance education fall into
two categories which are:
1. Telecommunications technologies that connect
instructors to distance learners
2. Classroom technologies that record, present, and
display instructional information.
Effective utilization of distance education classrooms
requires a new set of skills for most educators and
learners
