Assignment
Why Technical Posters?
◦ Structured poster sessions, popular at all
major conferences, are an important way
to
present your work and ideas throughout
your
scientific career.
◦ Posters allow authors and participants to
ask
questions and discuss their work in a
more
interactive manner than typical paper
sessions.
Objectives:
 To publicize your ideas/work
 To display what you did and how you
did it
 To draw conclusions of your ideas
 To encourage participants to ask
questions
 To communicate effectively & clearly
 To present your findings in an
engaging & logical manner
Time-Limit
 Oral Presentation to Judges: 5 minutes maximum
 Question & Answer session by Judges and the
audience: 2 minutes
 TIME LIMIT SHOULD BE STRICTLY
FOLLOWED; any extension can lead to deduction
of marks.
 Both the authors have to speak, in sync.
 Proper presentation prevents presentation
predicaments.
Guidelines
 Any suitable poster medium/material can be used: paper (chart
sheets), vinyl sheets, stiff cloth, hard plastic sheets etc.
 Ideally the Poster area SHOULD NOT EXCEED 1 m2.
 Poster should have PRINTED DATA ONLY (including graphs,
pictures, diagrams etc.).
 If you are planning to make a full-size digital poster, the most ideal
software is Adobe PHOTOSHOP.
 Paper print-outs can be stuck on a base made of any of these
materials, in case printing whole poster is difficult.
 No form of artwork is acceptable: glitter, sparkle, paints etc. should
be strictly avoided. Remember that you are at a TECHNICAL poster
session, not an art exhibition.
 Models (if any) may be included, but oral presentation of the same
should be done within the same allotted time limit of 7 minutes.
 Do remember that your team will be judged strictly on your
poster only.
Guidelines
Some guidelines are given below
1.Students are free to choose any layout as per their
requirement/creativity.
2.To maintain the uniformity this is mandatory that only A3 size thick
paper should be used as a medium/material for making posters.
3.Ask the students to limit the text to about one-fourth of the poster
space, and use visuals (graphs, photographs, schematics, maps, etc.)
to discuss the topic.
Text can be used to
introduce the study (what hypothesis was tested or what problem was
investigated? why was the study worth doing?)
explain visuals and direct viewers attention to significant data trends
and relationships portrayed in the visuals
state and explain the interpretations that follow from the data.
In many cases, conclusions can be summarized in a bullet-point list.
Depending upon the stage or nature of the project, the text could also
include sections on future research plans or questions for discussion
with viewers.
Text should be readable from five feet away.
Guidelines
 Lettering for the title should be large. Use all capital letters for the title.
 Visuals should be simple and bold. Each visual should have a brief title .
 Make sure that any visual can stand alone, graph axes are properly labelled,
maps have north arrows and distance scales, symbols are explained, etc.
 Make sure that the text and the visuals are integrated. Figures should be
numbered consecutively according to the order in which are first mentioned
in the text.

 4.While evaluating kindly take care that there is a spread of marks so as to
have a bell shaped histogram. Only in exceptional cases marks should be
more than seventy five and such cases has to be justified by the concerned
faculty.
 5. Poster should be presented in synchronization .
 6. Poster falls under the category of presentation thus there may be variation
in marks allotted to the student of the same group.
 7.No. of students in a group should be as follows

 Batch having strength <45 = 2-3 students in each group
 Batch having strength of 46 – 60 = 3-4 students in each group

The evaluation scheme for PDA 1-Technical Poster is as follows :
Some tips on making a
Technical Poster
Text & Readability
• Keep the text brief (less than 50% of the total poster
area); the message should be clear and understandable
without oral explanation.
• Data should be given in POINTS.
• Not more than 25-35 lines of text (or 15-20 points).
• All letters on your final poster should be big enough
to make it readable at 8 feet.
• Avoid lesser-known abbreviations, acronyms, or
jargon which may be difficult to comprehend.
• Keep the text Justified in alignment.
• Keep in mind that upper and lowercase letters
together are easier to read than all uppercase i.e. for
eg. “ These are the Results “ is better readable than “
THESE ARE THE RESULTS ”.
Poster Background and
Readability
Poster background and print should be in
contrasting colors.
A light background & dark print works well.
A dark background & light print also works well.
A dark background & dark print??? Not so much...
A light background & light print??? Not at all!
Making Intelligent Use of
Color
Color is an efficient and
effective way to draw
attention

Graphs & Figures
 A well-documented graph or figure is
way more attractive and better than
lengthy text.
 Tables are difficult to read; represent
data graphically whenever possible.
 A picture often is worth a thousand
words.
Aesthetics should be kept in mind
while using graphics.
Evaluating Posters
• Theme (Original & innovative)
• Technicality (Branch and domain
specific)
• Language (grammar, technical
vocabulary)
• Presentation (confidence level and
body language)
• Plagiarism
