This document discusses two approaches to teaching conversation skills: indirect and direct. The indirect approach implies that students acquire conversational competence through engaging in meaningful tasks rather than directly teaching conversation. The direct approach calls students' attention to conversational rules, conventions and strategies by directly teaching them.
