1.1. Concept of Teaching :
โ€œTeaching is a distinctively human activity. it is imparting of
knowledge and the learning process, the means by which the
student assimilates a share of it.
Teaching is an art because it is practiced with skills and a
science, because it is based on a body of systematically derived
knowledge converted to principles with which to guide its
practices.
Teaching Skills :
1. Introduction :
1.2 Meaning of Teacher competence :
The common wealth Report (1974) explains teachers
competency as โ€œIn order to be competent the teacher must have a
knowledge of child development of the material to be taught and
suitable methods his skills must enable him to teach, advice and
guide his pupils, community and culture with which he is involved,
his attitudes should be positive without being aggressive, so that
his example is likely to be followed as he transmits explicitly and
implicitly the national aims and moral and social values.
1.3 Competencies contributing to good mental health in
teaching :
1. Each teacher should acquire and maintain certain
qualities which are characteristics of mature personality.
2. Each teacher should develop a philosophy of life and
education.
3. Each teacher should possess knowledge of the nature of
human growth and development.
4. Each teacher should possess an appreciation and
understanding of the meaning and practice of democracy
in the classroom.
5. Each teacher should have an understanding of the
objectives and function of each social institution as the
family, the religious, institutions, Govt agencies and the
schools.
9. Each teacher should possess abilities in effective
use of expressive and receptive communication.
6. Each teacher should have knowledge of the ideas, leader
and events that produced the heritage of the nation .
7. Each teacher should have knowledge of the life, cultural
and Government of peoples in various countries.
8. Each teacher should have an understanding of the moral
values and ethics of the teaching profession.
