After opening in 1977, it became the seventh in a row in the USSR. In terms of the length of the operated lines, it ranks 68th in the
world and fourth among the subways of the former USSR (after Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kyiv).
Unlike most former Soviet metro stations, the system is shallow (its counterpart is the Minsk Metro). From 1980 until the early
1990s, it bore the name of V. I. Lenin. The Tashkent metro consists of four lines, 59.5 kilometers long and 43 stations (31
underground, 9 elevated and 3 ground).
