5. HISTORICAL HERITAGE
Uzbekistan – the state of Uzbeks in its meaning. There are number of
“Stans” in this part of the world, but the remarkable one is Uzbekistan. Rich
for its history, culture, crafts, and most important is people. Uzbekistan for
centuries became a home of hundred nations, a home for Muslims, Jews,
Christians, Zoroastrians and Buddhists. Its geographical location, good
agricultural resources and vast pastures turned this place into a bowl where
nations living together in friendship and peace. Since ancient times it is
famous as Transoxiana, laying between two rivers The Amu Darya and The
Sir Darya. Most of the territory was occupied by the nomads, herding their
cattle. Three states were sharing the territory and power independently;
Sogdiana, Bactria, Khorezm – where people were freeman. For centuries
continuous wars took place between these states. Region’s geographical
location, rich natural resources attracted invaders from surroundings. Today
journey to Uzbekistan will be memorable. You observe Madrassah, Mosques,
Minarets, Palaces and mausoleums decorated with incredible mosaic and
majolica tiles, noisy and colorful oriental bazaars, craftsmen busy with
creating ornaments, hospitality and ancient traditions and culture of locals.
Tashkent – is the capital of Independent Uzbekistan. With the history over
2200 years present Tashkent is one of the most important business centers
of Uzbekistan. Tashkent is indeed among the most attractive Central Asian
cities, the architecture is a combination of modern and old heritage, and
together with hospitality and friendliness of Tashkent people you feel a
harmony. It has passed the way from the small ancient settlement to the one
of the biggest Central Asian cities with a lot of memorable events in the
history, with the periods of rise and decline. Modern Tashkent is a political,
cultural, scientific and industrial center of Uzbekistan and Central Asia.

Samarkand - is the second largest city of Uzbekistan situated in
Zarafshan Valley which is surrounded by the extension of Pamir-Alay
Range. Ancient Afrosiyab (Samarkand) was well known both in the East
and in the West, as it was a major Silk Road city and played a main role
in Central Asia. It's a city visited by Alexander the Great, Genghis Khan
and Marco Polo. The capital of Tamerlane’s Empire, it proves the given

Bukhara – is defined among the most ancient Oriental towns, with its
meaning “Temple” from Sanskrit “Vihara”. It is probably the city with
the most monumental heritage preserved in Central Asia. Madrassahs,
Mosques, Mausoleums, and shrines in and around the city truly put it
on the same list with other “Noble” Muslim cities of the World as
Bukhoroi Sharif. Wondering around the old city you get the feeling of
being left somewhere in 18th – 19th century, old houses are still
forming main part of the old city. In Bukhara, where Silk Road markets
are still impressing with the choice of goods from local craftsman as
well from other parts Central Asia you need some time to get used to
the lifestyle. No doubt your visit to this city will last in your memories.
7. HISTORICAL HERITAGE
Khiva - History of this Khorezmian town dates to ancient times
when there were few civilizations around Central Asia.
Hundreds of years ago the Great Silk Road connected ancient
Khorezm by water and land with Europe and the East, the
North and the South. Surrounded by Kyzyl-Kum and Kara-Kum
Deserts Khiva is a true oasis. It has preserved an exotic
character of ancient city, untouched by the time till the
present. The palaces with the rich mosaic, beautiful Minarets,
Madrassahs and Mosques here are amazing us with paintings,
astonishing combinations of the colors coming from the depth
of Amu Darya River and desert. Ichan Kala is an open Museum
as it feels like the life stopped here in a moment, monuments
are inviting to come in and feel the magic of the history. Many
visitors find Khiva as the most memorable part of their tour to
Central Asia.
Termez - truly the center of Buddhism and trade in the past.
This city lays on the shore of the Amu Darya River - Oxus and
amazes with the ruins of temples and mosques once standing
there. The land of the great Scholars and Saint’s, it’s still visited
by pilgrims. The capital of the ancient Bactria, the dream of
many conquerors. You will find your treasure among the sights
of Termez.
8. CULTURE AND ARTS
Uzbek customs and traditions - Most likely, everybody is
familiar with the following collocation: "in accordance with the
rites of hospitality". In a sense it reflects one of the most
ancient and highly valued customs that has survived to our
time. In the older days, however, among the peoples of the
Orient, including the Uzbeks, hospitality was a must in terms of
life standards and morality. On setting out on a journey, a
traveler often found himself in hostile environment of nature.
But what consoled him was the hope that in the nearest village
and even in an isolated nomad's tent he will be provided with
shelter, food and warmth.
Applied art - Handicraft developed in Uzbekistan from century
to century, leaving unique products of the unknown foremen
with rich arts, imaginations and perfection in Uzbek heritage,
due to the changes of social and economic conditions, crafts
gradually became the second after industrial productions on
an extent of 20th century. Today, in Uzbekistan enormous
attention is rendered towards national foremen in the field.
The careful attitude towards the traditional cultural values
became one of the main ranks of state policy. The revival of
handicraft traditions was part of a logical progress, derived
from the aspiration to preserve the national culture.
9. PEOPLE AND RELIGIONS
Uzbekistan is the multinational state. Tens of nations and
nationalities live in this country, and among them there are not only
native nations of Central Asia – Tajiks, Kazakhs, Kyrgyz, Uygur,
Dungan, but also representatives of Europe and East – Russians,
Tatars, Germans, Jews, Lithuanians, Poles, Ukrainians, Byelorussians,
Greeks, Turks. Also big diasporas of Koreans, Iranians, Armenians,
Georgians, Azerbaijanis, Ossetians and Chechens live in Uzbekistan.
Such ethnic diversity is concerned with various historical events.
Many ethnic nations of Soviet republics were evacuated here during
the World War Second , representatives of certain nations were
exiled here during Stalin’s repressions. Today Uzbekistan population
exceeds 29 million people. About 80% of population are Uzbeks,
more than 10% are representatives of Central Asian nations (Tajiks
(4,5%), Kazakhs (2,5%), Karakalpak (2%), Kyrgyz (1%), Turkmens and
others). Other largest ethnic groups include Russians (5%) and other
Slavic nations.
Religion - Before Islam came to Uzbekistan in the early years of the
medieval period the people here used to worship elements of
nature. The proof of this has been preserved in the traditional folk-
art that speaks volumes about pre-Islamic Uzbekistan. Before the
Arabs became the paramount political power, this region had
already been exposed to Buddhism, Christianity, Judaism,
Zoroastrianism. With the Arabs came Islam. Today 88% of the
population is Muslim of which most are Sunni Muslims. Around 10%
of the population is orthodox Christian. The remaining 2% is
comprised of Jews, Catholics and Buddhists. The Uzbek people have
traditionally been a tolerant people. All religions receive equal
respect in this secular country though Islam, in recognition of its
historical significance, is accorded special status by the constitution.
10. MARKETS AND SHOPPING
Uzbekistan was a part of The Great Silk Road and connected the
East and the West, the North and the South. Here were available
goods from all around the world. And local craftsmen produced
their goods with the influence of all cultures. Modern Uzbekistan
is very popular for its markets, full of seasonable fruits, traditional
crafts and souvenirs. Most of the tourist purchase The Silk Road
product in Samarkand, Bukhara and Tashkent, which were popular
along the Ancient Trade Route. Uzbekistan is one of the biggest
exporters of cotton and raw silk, and nowadays of ready cotton
