This document discusses how shape-changing interfaces can enhance interactions with virtual environments by bringing physical qualities that are missing from typical virtual experiences. It proposes three concepts for shape-changing interfaces: 1) Affordance, using an object's shape to indicate its purpose; 2) Habituality, allowing users to develop familiar body movements when interacting; and 3) Periphery, creating awareness of one's surroundings through subtle changes. Examples are given like the Morphing Cube and Tactile Experience prototypes, which aim to incorporate these concepts through their shape-shifting abilities. The goal is to develop "calm technologies" that enhance virtual experiences with physical sensations and movements normally associated with real-world interactions.
