Taiwan is an island country located off the eastern coast of mainland China. It has been governed independently from mainland China since 1949. The capital and largest city is Taipei. Taiwan's population is mostly Han Chinese descendants as well as some indigenous peoples. The economy was previously driven by manufacturing but now focuses on finance, technology, and other service industries. Some of Taiwan's most popular tourist attractions include the National Palace Museum, Taroko National Park, and Sun Moon Lake.
