Taiwan is an island about the size of Vancouver Island located off the east coast of China. It has a mountainous interior and is divided into four regions - the north, central, east, and south. The population of Taiwan is around 23 million, most of whom are Chinese immigrants from southern China who fled after the Communist victory in 1949. The island also has 13 indigenous groups. Taiwan has a varied cuisine reflecting its diverse population and locally grown foods. Its flag features a blue rectangle with a white sun on a red background, representing democracy, nationalism, and livelihood.
