The Tacoma Narrows Bridge, nicknamed "Galloping Gertie", collapsed on November 7, 1940 due to aeroelastic flutter caused by 42 mph winds. The original bridge cost $7 million to build but was completely destroyed in the collapse. A replacement bridge was built and opened in 1950 at a cost of $15 million. The science of bridge aerodynamics was established as a result of investigating the collapse of the original Tacoma Narrows Bridge.
