A table napkin is a piece of cloth, usually made of linen or cotton, that is placed on a table during meals. It is used to wipe hands and mouths while eating and drinking, and can also wipe the face if needed. Table napkins are folded in various styles that contribute to the appearance and atmosphere of the dining setting. Some common napkin folds seen in restaurants include the pyramid, arrow, bird of paradise, and french folds. Students are assigned to bring their own table napkins to class and demonstrate folding the napkin into 10 different styles within 3 minutes for an individual performance assessment.
