HUNGER IS CLOSELY INTERLINKED TO POVERTY Statistics by the World Bank has recorded that Singapore has the highest Gini coefficient in the developed world of today. It shows that income inequality is increasing in Singapore. WHEREARE MOST OF THESEPEOPLE FOUNDAT? We often do not realise the urgency of this matter. We don’t see poor people begging on the streets after all as begging is illegal OVERVIEW OF THE HUNGER SITUATION IN SINGAPORE Bedo k Woodlands A Voluntary Welfare Organization, Food from the Heart♥, distributes unsold bread from local bakeries to approximately 11,000 individuals every month – helping to reduce food wastage as well as feeding the hungry. Unstable/low family income Unwilling to accept help for fear of being looked down upon HUNGER Ang Mo kio Juron g WHY ARE PEOPLE HUNGRY? Old HDB estates/ One-room flats/ Rental units where it is not as well-developed Lower cost of living Higher concentration of the poor (Courtesy of Park Yewon, Chen Jie, Victoria Tan, Zhang Ruoxi & Sharmayne Soh of Sec 3O’2014, Cedar Girls’ Secondary School.)
- 4. Formal Groups Dedicated to this Cause: Willing Hearts Food From the Heart (FFTH) Formal Groups who help the needy & who have branched into this cause: YWCA – Meals on Wheels Touch Community Services – Meals on Wheels Heart to Heart And there are many more!!!
- 5. Project Love Lunch A Packet of Rice And there are many more such ad hoc groups of people who have organised themselves, pooling together funds from their own pockets or apportioning a sum from the company’s annual profits to help the needy, be it regularly or especially near festive occasions!!!
- 9. Unfortunately, this lovely soul (who incidentally, is an ex-Cedarian!) passed away in 2015. Listen to a snippet of an interview your seniors conducted with her, explaining why she was compelled to start the Chope Food for the Needy Movement & how she intended for it to be.
