SUMMER 2016
2. 2
Bread of Life Mission exists
to give Salih, and others
like him, help and hope. In
his time of need, Salih had
a safe place to sleep, hot
nutritious food to eat and
support until he was ready
to move on.
With your support, people
like Salih can find help
and hope when they walk
through the door at Bread
of Life Mission.
Please support our
emergency services.
22-year old Salih grew up in Austin
Texas. When he was 18 he enlisted
in the Navy, however, Salih’s true
interest was in business. He enrolled in
on-line college classes at Texas A&M
to earn an accounting degree. Three
years later, in November 2015 Salih
completed his degree, and shortly after
he decided to move on from the Navy.
The hour long ferry ride from
Bremerton to Seattle gave Salih little
time to contemplate his options.
He had just transitioned out of the
Navy – without support, and he was
broke. And going back to family
in Texas was not an option.
After embarking off the ferry, Salih
began his search for a place to spend
the night. It was Seattle winter weather,
38°F and rainy - typical weather for
a late afternoon, but it was not your
average day, it was December 25th.
Bread of Life is only a 10-minute walk
from the Waterfront ferry dock. As luck
would have it Salih arrived just in time to
join the Mission’s famous hot Christmas
A HOMELESS GRADUATE
dinner, AND there was also a warm
bed available in the emergency shelter.
“I was just like any homeless person,
I needed food and shelter. If it wasn’t
for Bread of Life, I’d have been out on
the street on Christmas Day last year.”
For the first three months Salih stayed in
The Mission’s nightly emergency shelter.
He attended Chapel from time to time,
contemplating his options and mostly
kept to himself going about his day.
In early March a diploma arrived
at The Mission – it was Salih’s.
Bread of Life became Salih’s home. He
was hired as a file clerk at Amazon and
his path out of homelessness began to
form. “The Mission was my family, and
I am grateful for the help and support.”
While staying at the Mission, Salih
was able to save money and in June
he moved on. Salih was offered a
permanent job with Amazon in San
Antonio, Texas. This was the right time to
reunite with his family – as a graduate
with a job! Congratulations, Salih!
A diploma arrived at the Mission – who was the graduate?

STAFF STORY
Renata leads development and communications at Bread of
Life Mission, and her mission is to connect people in need
with people who would like to help.
She loves tea, and begins her workday with a visit to the
Bread of Life Mission kitchen to get hot water. The kitchen
is the soul of Bread of Life. And this is where Renata met
one of the residents, Barry, who was in charge of the daily
offering of pastries for the Day Shelter coffee mornings.
Barry learned that Renata (and the development team) loved
cake pops… and from then on there were four “fresh” cake
pops ready for pick up nearly every morning!
It is people like Barry who share their hopes and dreams
for new beginnings that inspire her work – hearing about
resolutions to do better; overcome addiction, rejoin family,
find employment, complete a degree or “simply get life back
in order.”
Renata’s passion for development began the moment after
she gave her first gift. She served on non-profit boards for
13 years leading the fundraising and as Board Chair in
education and social services. Following her board service
Renata made non-profit development her career in 2012.
Renata has a BSc. in Economics from Copenhagen Business
School.
Please accept her invitation for coffee or lunch in Pioneer
Square or elsewhere! renatah@breadoflifemission.org
Renata Hasle,
the newest member of our team, leads
development and communications at
Bread of Life Mission.
LOOKING FORWARD
First, please allow me to express my gratitude for your faithful and generous support.
Without you, we would fall way short in our scope of work helping the homeless with
their daily challenges. For this we are eternally grateful.
We know that the keys to long-term success and stability for individuals with addiction and
for people living in the streets are: mental health counseling, housing and employment.
This fall and with God’s help, we will expand our services to meet the critical need for
mental health counseling both to our own residents in the LifeChange program and to our
Day Shelter guests.
We will hire a Vice President of Programs who will implement new counseling
opportunities and integrate them with our current substance abuse program. Our new
VP of Programs will bring expertise in operating social service programs within a rescue
mission and trained in mental health counseling.
We covet your continuous prayers as we endeavor to help improve the quality of life for
those needing our help.
