Syncope is an abrupt loss of consciousness that is transient, with full recovery of neurologic function. It can be caused by neural, cardiac, orthostatic, or neurogenic factors. The most common type is neurally mediated syncope, which involves a reflex response in young adults that causes vasodilation, bradycardia, and hypotension, decreasing cerebral blood flow. Neurally mediated syncope includes vasovagal syncope, situational syncope, and carotid sinus syndrome.
