Syncope
• Syncope is a transient and abrupt loss of
consciousness with complete return to
preexisting neurologic function. It is
classified as neurally mediated (i.e.,
carotid sinus hypersensitivity, situational,
or vasovagal), cardiac, orthostatic, or
neurogenic.
• Neurally mediated syncope is the most
common and is seen primarily in young
adults.
• A reflex response causes vasodilation,
bradycardia, and systemic hypotension
leading to decreased cerebral blood flow.
• Neurally mediated syncope includes
vasovagal syncope, situational syncope,
and carotid sinus
syndrome/hypersensitivity.
