3. INTRODUCTION
 A Decision Support System (DSS) is an interactive
computer-based system or subsystem intended to help
decision makers use communications technologies, data,
documents, knowledge and/or models to identify and
solve problems, complete decision process tasks, and
make decisions.
 Decision Support System is a general term for any
computer application that enhances a person or groups
ability to make a decision.
 Decision Support Systems refers to an academic field of
research that involves designing and studying Decision
Support Systems in their context of use.

11. MODEL MANAGEMENT-
 It consists of both DSS models and the DSS model
mgt. systems.
 A model is the representation of some event, fact,
or situation.
 DSS help in various decision-making situations by
using models that allow you to analyze information
in many different ways.
 This system stores and maintains the DSSs
models.
 Its functioning of managing models is similar to that

 This component performs the function of storing
and maintaining the information that you want your
DSS to use.
 The data mgt. component, therefore, consists of
both the DSS information and the DSS database
mgt. system.
 The information you use in your DSS comes from
one or more of three sources:-
1. Organizational information
2. External information
3. Personal information

14. USER INTERFACE MANAGEMENT
 This component allows you to communicate with
DSS.
 This is the component that allows you to combine
your know-how with the storage and processing
capabilities of the computer.
 The user interface is the part of the system you
see; through it you enter information, commands,
and models.
 The best user interface uses your terminology and
methods and is flexible, consistent, simple, and

15. GROUP DECISION SUPPORT SYSTEM(GDSS)
 A group decision support system (GDSS) is an
interactive computer based system that facilitates a
number of decision-makers (working together in a
group) in finding solutions to problems that are
unstructured in nature. They are designed in such a
way that they take input from multiple users
interacting simultaneously with the systems to
arrive at a decision as a group.
 The tools and techniques provided by group
decision support system improve the quality and
effectiveness of the group meetings.
