The tourism industry in India is the most rapidly growing industry, employing 39.5 million people or 7.7% of the country's workforce. In 2012, tourism generated 6.4 trillion INR or 6.6% of India's total GDP. However, India ranks only 65th out of 140 countries in the Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Index ratings. While the industry has grown, weaknesses include inadequate infrastructure as well as safety, security, and cleanliness issues. The government is working to market India as an "Incredible" tourism destination and improve facilities and transportation.
