The editorial contents in SSH are produced by public fundsThe main editorial cost is the salary of the copy editor.Commercial publisher when appears is primarily operating as a printer, and/or a distributor The most important part of the publishing cost of an article is the salary of the copy editor: The average time required for copy editing tasks per journal and per year is 10.5 months as for the 50 journals of our sample. The editor’s tasks we are talking about are: managing articles from their selection to their expertise (through peer review), rewrite some of the work, check critical apparatus and add missing references, copy edit, structure files through single source publishing process (with TEI-XML tools for example) and prepare paper and/or digital formats.10.5 months makes an average of 42.000€ a year (salary). We can conclude that the median cost for 1 item (article) produced in SSH is 1.330€ (minimum cost is 500 and maximum 4.000), and the median cost for 1 page is 66€ (minimum cost is 5 and maximum 200). The share of the cost for the print, broadcast and distribution is not predominant in relation to the salary of the editor: The response we got from 25 of the journals is that the yearly average cost for printing and distribution is 11.200€

It receives funding from The Andrew Mellon Foundation. The project aims to create an environment for intensive work with digital collections, support innovative uses of the collections through competitions and events, and produce case studies of the research. It provides access to datasets such as books, images, and web archives for text mining, visualization, and other research methods. Two current projects through the Labs involve mixing digital collections like a DJ mixes music and generating samples of 19th century texts that represent the distribution of parameters in bibliographic catalogs.

- Cooperative Print Archiving (CPA) in Switzerland was initiated in 2006 as a voluntary program for libraries to archive print journals collectively to avoid duplications. - Under the program, individual libraries declared responsibility for archiving specific subject areas and the archived runs were marked in catalogs for other libraries to access. - However, over time the voluntary nature of the program and lack of oversight led to weaknesses as responsibilities were not always fulfilled and the concept was not adapted to changing technologies and models. - New challenges include more publishers providing only electronic access, budget pressures on libraries, and the need to integrate the new Cooperative Storage Library concept into the CPA framework.

Strong mandatory policies that require deposit and prohibit waiving open access were found to have higher deposit rates and lower deposit latency compared to weaker policies. However, overall deposit rates of full-text articles into institutional repositories remain low at only 15% on average. While open access policies have proliferated, the goal of providing immediate open access to scholarly articles has not yet been fully achieved, suggesting a need to re-examine open access strategy and policy effectiveness.

Europe has the most open access policies and mandates in the world, with over 350 of each. The Horizon 2020 program in the EU mandates open access for peer-reviewed publications while allowing funding for open access journal fees. It recommends that EU member states develop consistent open access policies and coordinate reporting and stakeholder discussions at the national and EU levels to further align open access conditions across countries. Challenges in developing open access policies at the national level include a lack of awareness, understanding and engagement among policymakers as well as some resistance to the concept of openness.

Scholarly communication refers to how academics find information, create knowledge, and share it with students and beyond academia. Traditionally, scholars would meet and correspond privately, but scholarly journals emerged as correspondence increased. Problems with the current system include commercial publishers controlling access and pricing out readers. Open Access aims to make scholarly works free online, either by publishing in an Open Access journal or self-archiving in an institutional repository. There are advocacy policies and mandates growing for Open Access worldwide to benefit research dissemination and public access to taxpayer-funded work.

The David Wilson Library at the University of Leicester has undergone many expansions over the decades to try and keep up with the growing student population and need for space. The latest expansion created a state-of-the-art library with 1500 study spaces, group rooms, 350 computers, and a café. User surveys found extremely high satisfaction ratings with the new design. While it has doubled library visits, the space is now often overcrowded. The next steps discussed are providing even more study and group spaces to meet the growing demand.

This report explores the significance of border towns and spaces for strengthening responses to young people on the move. In particular it explores the linkages of young people to local service centres with the aim of further developing service, protection, and support strategies for migrant children in border areas across the region. The report is based on a small-scale fieldwork study in the border towns of Chipata and Katete in Zambia conducted in July 2023. Border towns and spaces provide a rich source of information about issues related to the informal or irregular movement of young people across borders, including smuggling and trafficking. They can help build a picture of the nature and scope of the type of movement young migrants undertake and also the forms of protection available to them. Border towns and spaces also provide a lens through which we can better understand the vulnerabilities of young people on the move and, critically, the strategies they use to navigate challenges and access support. The findings in this report highlight some of the key factors shaping the experiences and vulnerabilities of young people on the move – particularly their proximity to border spaces and how this affects the risks that they face. The report describes strategies that young people on the move employ to remain below the radar of visibility to state and non-state actors due to fear of arrest, detention, and deportation while also trying to keep themselves safe and access support in border towns. These strategies of (in)visibility provide a way to protect themselves yet at the same time also heighten some of the risks young people face as their vulnerabilities are not always recognised by those who could offer support. In this report we show that the realities and challenges of life and migration in this region and in Zambia need to be better understood for support to be strengthened and tuned to meet the specific needs of young people on the move. This includes understanding the role of state and non-state stakeholders, the impact of laws and policies and, critically, the experiences of the young people themselves. We provide recommendations for immediate action, recommendations for programming to support young people on the move in the two towns that would reduce risk for young people in this area, and recommendations for longer term policy advocacy.
