This document summarizes an educational program called "Inventing Europe" that uses Europeana, a digital platform containing over 22 million cultural heritage objects, to teach modern European history. Over the past 14 years, more than 300 researchers from Europe and North America have collaborated on the program across multiple institutions. - By a show of hands: who of you has ever heard of this first European Digital Museum of Science & Technology? I’m gonna change that. So, where does the idea of Inventing Europe come from?

- Making Europe book project is the last masterpiece of the ToE network Making Europe shows a new approach to modern European history from a perspective that is pan-European, transnational and uses the lens of technology
- Inventing Europe is part of the Making Europe dissemination package We connect the research results of Making Europe with the digital collections of our 11 European cultural heritage partners, which includes Europeana.
- When we went live in September 2012 we decided to test the site amongst 3 target user groups. Scholars and researchers Higher education - students & teachers in late secondary school or university in area of history and Science and Technology Studies. Heritage professionals – museums, archives and libraries from within and beyond Europe
- Each of our visitors can explore 6 permanent exhibitions in which they can explore the history of the daily lives, knowledge networks, governance, media and globalization of Europe.
- Each exhibition contains upt to 6 tours, that in turn consist of 6 stories and 6 objects. These are all carefully constructed by an acknowledged scholar and accompanied by a source list and extensive object metadata.
- Our partners can also create their own tours. They learn to look at their collections differently and we increase their visibility. Heritage professionals see IE as ‘added value’ for their collections and exhibitions. IE provides them with: content enrichment of their collections and objects Transnationalization of their collections; The increase in the visibility of their collections; Larger number of hits for their websites.
- Besides, below each story the visitor can explore other related objects to the topic of that story…within our partners collections and via the Europeana API.
- These wide variety of options and entrance points have made that in 8 months we have had almost 10.000 visitors. … … hardly without any marketing activities. 8 conferences: science / cultural heritage On the web: - press releases on 3 scientific blog sites / TUE local news / NGI / blog on Europeana pro IE Brochure - 2500 copies.
- What is specific about Europeana that we want to work with them? Initially the idea was to create an online searchable portal in which objects were translated EXCELLENTLY. We thought we could create a design interface allowing people to search Europeana a bit better.
- Guess what? We did not succeed in doing this. What Europeana is doing is very complicated and we are happy that we can use their API.
- These are quite a few. - Let me tell you a bit about one of our focal points: education In Sept. 2012 we started an education experiment: 11 teachers, 8 universities, 7 countries, 17-19 courses, - in total about 1300 students. Netherlands, Germany, Poland, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Greece, Portugal
- An educational program? We wondered if we could create an educational program around this new history, and make this freely available worldwide
- First impression is that the Europeana API on our site is very important for our education goals. From the Dutch case I can tell that about 50% of the students used Europeana to find objects for their assignments They found objects from our other partners To found objects missing in the other partner collections
- Result: an educational program Many creative and innovative “uncommon” assignments that are useful for different studies A set of learning objectives Teachers: enthusiastic – curious about each others’ experiences – desire for instructions and example teaching material
