Crowsnest Fire
On August 21, 2003, a seasonal wildfire in Crowsnest Pass, Alberta abruptly changed direction and grew into a massive fire that burned over 20,000 hectares of forest. The wall of flames spanned 6 kilometers and reached 50 meters high, with an energy equivalent to an atomic explosion every 30 minutes. The fast-moving fire forced the evacuation of area residents, including Elaine Hruby, who watched in horror as the towering flames approached. While local businesses were spared significant damage, the timber and tourism industries suffered losses. However, the fire also created new growth and diversity, and though challenging for firefighters and residents, ultimately allowed the area to renew itself over time.
