Sustainability a Once in
a Life Time Opportunity
What do we do?
We plant
TREES
to offset CO2
as the world
travels.
What’s the Problem?
Travel & Climate Change
• Now more than ever, we need to take into consideration the sensitive
link between travel and the environment.
• #flightshame & covid-19 highlighted travel’s environmental impact.
• Current CO2 offset programs are complicated, poorly marketed and
poorly understood, and can be expensive.
• Climate crisis terminology inducing fear & guilt create apathy towards
action & progress.
• For a sustainable future, we must adopt a different mindset, and now.
What’s the CO2 situation today?
We are already way beyond safe
levels of CO2 in our atmosphere.
In 2021, we will reach levels 50%
higher than pre-industrial concentrations.
How is CO2 produced?
• Carbon dioxide (CO2) is added to the atmosphere by
human activities. When we burn fuels like wood, coal, natural
gas, gasoline, and oil, carbon dioxide is released. During this
burning, carbon from the fossil fuels combine with oxygen in the
air to form carbon dioxide and water vapor.
• CO2 in the atmosphere then traps heat & makes global
temperatures rise. Earth's global average surface temperature
in 2020 was one of the warmest years on record. As levels
rise, floods, droughts, storms & crop failures intensify.
• To reduce these levels, we must slow down our consumption,
cut our emissions, and draw existing carbon out of the
atmosphere, we need to restore the planet’s natural balance.

The CO2 Culprits
Our actions, at home, at work,
as we travel consume energy &
produce CO2 emissions
• It is clear that power generation, deforestation and road
transport are the worst offenders.
• Reducing our emissions and drawing existing carbon out of
the atmosphere is a priority, it will require massive efforts from
many different sectors, with a combination of approaches.
• Tourism accounts for 8% of annual global CO2
emissions, 3% of which is from air travel.
• Travel is a comparatively small contributor, however travel has
high value transactions where offsetting is a relatively small
percentage of the transaction value.
• Whilst reducing CO2 is important there is a safe level that we
can achieve quite easily and simply. It’s all about balance!

What is Earth Overshoot Day?
Earth Overshoot Day 1970 to 2020
• When there is balance, the Earth does a great
job at absorbing most of our CO2 emissions.
• Earth’s overshoot day marks the date
when humanity has exhausted nature’s
budget for the year.
• But, it has been struggling to keep up.
• Due to the world pandemic, 2020 was the
first time there was a reduction of - 7%
Climate Change – It’s time to act
Working Together
• No one country, leader, company or individual can solve the
climate crisis alone – impactful climate action is required in
multiple sectors – it’s now time to all work together.
• Climate change is affecting lives all over the world, with
more and more extreme weather events., causing severe
flooding, forest fires - destroying our homes, livelihoods and
environnement.
• While the scientists and engineers of the world work on
better solutions for transport and energy, we can start the
process towards positive change through mindful
actions and mindful travel.
• Trees4Travel offers a simple, natural, yet powerful way to
help offset emissions and feel a tangible contribution to a
better safer world.
What’s our mission?
Harmonizing
Business Travel
with the Environment
• Travel produces vast amounts of CO2 and although technology
is improving efficiency, emissions are still increasing.
• Educating travelers on sustainability, engaging them in planting
projects & focusing on the many positive benefits is key.
• Our mission is to harmonize travel with the environment
through clear, positive, engaging travel and environmental
messaging with tangible results.
The Future is Mindful Business Travel
.
Working together & shared goals
Committed To Improving The Planet
The Trillion Tree
Community
• Trees4Travel is part of the World Economic Forum’s
community-driven initiative led by the United Nations
Environment Program to ensure the conservation &
restoration of one trillion trees within this decade.
• As one of the largest industries in the world, the Travel
Industry has the ability to deliver massive, urgently
needed progress against climate change through natural
biodiverse and sustainable development goals.
Why Trees?
Trees are the
Best Carbon
Technology
To combat carbon emissions, forest
restoration is ‘overwhelmingly more
powerful than all of the other climate
change solutions’
Prof. Dr. Thomas Ward Crowther is a British scientist specialising in
ecosystem ecology and the chief scientific advisor to the
UN's Trillion Tree Campaign.
SIMPLE - IMPACTFUL - AFFORDABLE
• Scientists ‘know of no other current
carbon drawdown solution that is
quantitatively as large in terms of
carbon capture.’ (Source Science May 2020)
• There used to be 6 trillion trees on Earth,
today only about 3 trillion trees remain
and despite human activities such as
agriculture and urbanisation we still have
900 million hectares of tree restoration
potential in the world.
• Currently, tree planting is considered to be
one of the most cost effective methods
of offsetting CO2.

• Trees absorb (sequester) CO2 by storing the carbon in their trunks,
branches & roots, and release the oxygen back into the air that we breathe.
• CO2 sequestration & growth rates depend on the tree species & location.
• Our example below is based on a typical hard wood tree.
(CCUs are primarily used for mandatory co2 emission reporting - minimum purchase 1000 CCUs - certificates provided on payment)
Trees4Travel logs
the CCUs against
the corporate’s
emissions to help
them stay on track.
Trees4Travel buys CCUs
so forest owners and
local communities can
maintain and conserve
the forests.
3rd party standards
measure CO2
absorption of
established forests and
issue CCU Certificates.
Trees4Travel selects
established and
protected forests from
around the world that
offer ‘Certified Carbon
Units’.
Corporates buy CCUs
from Trees4Travel and
receive certificates
that can be used for
mandatory offsetting.

Our current forest is an Amazonian conservation project of 40,000 hectares in Acre, Brazil which is validated to a gold level for climate adaptation, as well
as delivering exceptional community and biodiversity benefits, conserving several vulnerable tree species along with numerous bird species. This land was
previously going to be cleared for livestock rearing, however this project is now establishing alternative economic activities for the local communities
including commercializing the collection of medicinal plants and acai (ah-sigh-EE) berries, a superfood, grape-like fruit.
Certified Carbon Units CCUs

community maintain
the saplings and trees.
Trees4Travel monitor
and report progress.
Trees are scheduled for
planting - locations are
shared and supported
with photos, video
footage and satellite
imaging.
Trees4Travel calculates the
CO2 absorbed – reporting
to travelers and companies
each month so they can
see their emissions versus
the absorption.
Trees4Travel selects and
vets tree planting
organisations from around
the world that focus on
reforestation, biodiversity
and local communities.
Travelers and companies
plant trees through
Trees4Travel to offset
their carbon emissions
from their historic and
up coming trips.

How & where do we plant?
The Tree Projects
Our tree planting ethos is based on key
objectives :
• working closely with verified tree
planting organisations from around the
world who are experts in their local
environments, involving local
communities and all stakeholders
• we plant a variety of tree species that
are indigenous to a region to maximise
biodiversity and restore natural
ecosystems.
• we prioritise reforestation projects
which have the highest impact for the
environment.

Corporate ‘Legacy Forests’
Create A Corporate
‘Legacy Forest’
Corporates can show in a tangible, powerful way, their
commitment to sustainability with their own ‘Legacy Forest’:
• Multiple projects available - all continents.
• Transactions are classed as ‘sponsorship’ (according to
current UK accounting legislation) and are fully tax
deductible.
• Rotating widget can be added to corporate websites, to
show our collective progress with number of trees planted +
CO2 to be absorbed.
Our Emissions CALCULATIONS are based on:
• DEFRA The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs - UK. The government
conversion factors for greenhouse gas reporting are for use by UK and international organisations
to report on greenhouse gas emissions.
• GHG Protocol The Greenhouse Gas Protocol Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standard
provides calculation tools, requirements and guidance for companies and other organizations
preparing a corporate-level GHG emissions inventory.
• IPCC The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change is the United Nations body for assessing
the science related to climate change - 195 member countries.
AND
Cover all types of transport such as air, train, ferry, car and trucks & all fuel types.
Accommodation such as hotel and rentals.
Accurate Emissions Calculations
How does it work?
We aim to offset a trip’s emissions within 10 years.
The trees then go on offsetting for another 140 + years!
Corporates can start the process by offsetting any past travel.

Enormous Positive
Environmental Impact
Potential From Travel
• Travel is one of the biggest industries in the world.
• Tourism is a major driver of the world economy,
accounting for 7% of international trade.
• The market size in the different travel sectors shows
the enormous potential.
• Insignificant price, compared to travel purchase.
• Sustainable, mindful travel needs to be the future
of all travel.
Pre Covid-19 Figures
Sustainable Travel Community
Sharing
Responsibility
• We are creating a collaboration of travel suppliers at every
touchpoint of a journey - from TMC to ground transport, to
airports & airlines to hotels & rental accommodation.
• Corporates can purchase trees through their TMC to share
responsibility.
• Partners can help by allowing travelers to exchange loyalty
points for trees.
• Enabling a shared responsibility between the traveler & each
supplier of a trip, ensuring all are on the same page, helping
towards the same goal of carbon neutrality.
Airlines Impact
Airline Offsets
• 4.3 billion airline passengers per year (2019)
• 880 billion kilos of CO2 produced by air travel (2019)
• If passengers purchase just 1.5 trees each time they fly, air
transport could be neutral within 10 years, in fact NEGATIVE after
that, pulling more CO2 out of the air than emitted.
• Trees keep absorbing as more flights are made and as more trees
are planted - there will be a point in time when there is more
CO2 being offset than created.

Trains
The Most
Sustainable Travel
• Travelling 1,000 miles by train produces 41 kgs of
CO2 per passenger.
• Rail Transport is currently the most environment -
friendly way to travel other than cycling or walking.
• A typical train line can carry 50,000 people per
hour. Compare this with a motorway, which can
move only 2,500 people per hour.
London to Paris
+ 3 Hotel Nights = 1 Tree
( to offset within 10 years )
Road Transport
LA to Las Vegas
+ 2 Hotel Nights = 2 Tree
• If you travel 1,000 miles by car alone, you would emit
275 kgs of CO2.
• 1 tree will offset the CO2 from 200 miles of trips –
costing less than a penny per mile.
Motor Vehicle Offsets
( to offset within 10 years )
• Travel needs a new ‘green’ focus - a focus that is integral to health,
wellbeing and the planet.
• We are beyond safe levels of carbon in our atmosphere.
• The United Nations has stated that we have 10 years to fix this.
• Reforestation is overwhelmingly more powerful than all other climate
change solutions.
• 72% of travelers believe we need to act now and make sustainable travel
choices.
• Our aim is to help all travelers cover their footprints within 10 years.
• Trees4Travel is the perfect product, message and ‘green’ partner, at the
right time.
What we know…
Don’t Talk
Just Act,
Don’t Say
Just Show,
Don’t Promise
Just Plant.

Sustainability a Once in a Life Time Opportunity - Trees4Travel

  • 1. Return to Travel - Post Event Slides -
  • 2. Julian Munsey Sales Director meonvalleytravel.com T: +44 (0) 116 264 5279 E: julianm@meonvalleytravel.co.uk Introduction On the 13th May 2021 we ran a digital event called Return To Travel. Below are the materials from the event including links to the video content more information on our new partnerships with CIBT Visa, Maiden Voyage and Trees4Travel. Travel has changed for UK businesses. COVID, working from home, Brexit and travel restrictions make for a minefield of challenges for Travel Managers. We seek to demystify some of these changes, with these practical workshops on core changes for businesses looking to return to travel. The four topics include: Diversity, Digital Passports, Sustainability and Changes to VISAs. We would love to help your business return to travel, so please reach out to me personally: julianm@meonvalleytravel.co.uk

  • 4. A true business entrepreneur at heart, specialising in innovation and technology. He is a contagious leader with a can-do attitude who is now devoting his time to one of the world’s biggest challenges: climate change. Rewilding the planet and making travel naturally sustainable is his new ambition. Nico Nicholas - Trees4Travel Sustainability a Once in a Life Time Opportunity
  • 5. What do we do? We plant TREES to offset CO2 as the world travels.
  • 6. What’s the Problem? Travel & Climate Change • Now more than ever, we need to take into consideration the sensitive link between travel and the environment. • #flightshame & covid-19 highlighted travel’s environmental impact. • Current CO2 offset programs are complicated, poorly marketed and poorly understood, and can be expensive. • Climate crisis terminology inducing fear & guilt create apathy towards action & progress. • For a sustainable future, we must adopt a different mindset, and now.
  • 7. What’s the CO2 situation today? We are already way beyond safe levels of CO2 in our atmosphere. In 2021, we will reach levels 50% higher than pre-industrial concentrations. How is CO2 produced? • Carbon dioxide (CO2) is added to the atmosphere by human activities. When we burn fuels like wood, coal, natural gas, gasoline, and oil, carbon dioxide is released. During this burning, carbon from the fossil fuels combine with oxygen in the air to form carbon dioxide and water vapor. • CO2 in the atmosphere then traps heat & makes global temperatures rise. Earth's global average surface temperature in 2020 was one of the warmest years on record. As levels rise, floods, droughts, storms & crop failures intensify. • To reduce these levels, we must slow down our consumption, cut our emissions, and draw existing carbon out of the atmosphere, we need to restore the planet’s natural balance. (CO2 Levels Source: Mauna Loa Observatory) 350 PPM 414.7 PPM 416.4 PPM Maximum Safe Level of CO2 May 2019 – Rapid Rise of CO2 Levels May 2020 – Entering Dangerous CO2 Levels
  • 8. The CO2 Culprits Our actions, at home, at work, as we travel consume energy & produce CO2 emissions • It is clear that power generation, deforestation and road transport are the worst offenders. • Reducing our emissions and drawing existing carbon out of the atmosphere is a priority, it will require massive efforts from many different sectors, with a combination of approaches. • Tourism accounts for 8% of annual global CO2 emissions, 3% of which is from air travel. • Travel is a comparatively small contributor, however travel has high value transactions where offsetting is a relatively small percentage of the transaction value. • Whilst reducing CO2 is important there is a safe level that we can achieve quite easily and simply. It’s all about balance! 25% 20% 13% 12% 6% 6% 5% 4% 3%3%3% Power Generation Deforestation Road Transport Other Fertilizer Oil & Gas Livestock Cement Waste Iron& Steel Air Travel
  • 9. What is Earth Overshoot Day? Earth Overshoot Day 1970 to 2020 • When there is balance, the Earth does a great job at absorbing most of our CO2 emissions. • Earth’s overshoot day marks the date when humanity has exhausted nature’s budget for the year. • But, it has been struggling to keep up. • Due to the world pandemic, 2020 was the first time there was a reduction of - 7%
  • 10. Climate Change – It’s time to act Working Together • No one country, leader, company or individual can solve the climate crisis alone – impactful climate action is required in multiple sectors – it’s now time to all work together. • Climate change is affecting lives all over the world, with more and more extreme weather events., causing severe flooding, forest fires - destroying our homes, livelihoods and environnement. • While the scientists and engineers of the world work on better solutions for transport and energy, we can start the process towards positive change through mindful actions and mindful travel. • Trees4Travel offers a simple, natural, yet powerful way to help offset emissions and feel a tangible contribution to a better safer world.
  • 11. What’s our mission? Harmonizing Business Travel with the Environment • Travel produces vast amounts of CO2 and although technology is improving efficiency, emissions are still increasing. • Educating travelers on sustainability, engaging them in planting projects & focusing on the many positive benefits is key. • Our mission is to harmonize travel with the environment through clear, positive, engaging travel and environmental messaging with tangible results. The Future is Mindful Business Travel .
  • 12. Working together & shared goals Committed To Improving The Planet The Trillion Tree Community • Trees4Travel is part of the World Economic Forum’s community-driven initiative led by the United Nations Environment Program to ensure the conservation & restoration of one trillion trees within this decade. • As one of the largest industries in the world, the Travel Industry has the ability to deliver massive, urgently needed progress against climate change through natural biodiverse and sustainable development goals.
  • 13. Why Trees? Trees are the Best Carbon Technology To combat carbon emissions, forest restoration is ‘overwhelmingly more powerful than all of the other climate change solutions’ Prof. Dr. Thomas Ward Crowther is a British scientist specialising in ecosystem ecology and the chief scientific advisor to the UN's Trillion Tree Campaign. SIMPLE - IMPACTFUL - AFFORDABLE • Scientists ‘know of no other current carbon drawdown solution that is quantitatively as large in terms of carbon capture.’ (Source Science May 2020) • There used to be 6 trillion trees on Earth, today only about 3 trillion trees remain and despite human activities such as agriculture and urbanisation we still have 900 million hectares of tree restoration potential in the world. • Currently, tree planting is considered to be one of the most cost effective methods of offsetting CO2.
  • 14. Approximate CO2 Absorption - Sapling to Tree TREE LIFE Approx. 150 Years Year 1 Year 2 Year 3 Year 4 Year 5 Year 6 Year 7 Year 8 Year 9 Year10 Year 11 Year 150 First 10 Years CO2 Absorption = 164 Kg Total 3,100 kg CO2 Absorption + 22 kg CO2 Per Year 6 kgs 10 kgs 12 kgs 19 kgs 18 kgs 15 kgs 20 kgs 21 kgs 21 kgs 22 kgs 22 kgs • Trees absorb (sequester) CO2 by storing the carbon in their trunks, branches & roots, and release the oxygen back into the air that we breathe. • CO2 sequestration & growth rates depend on the tree species & location. • Our example below is based on a typical hard wood tree.
  • 15. (CCUs are primarily used for mandatory co2 emission reporting - minimum purchase 1000 CCUs - certificates provided on payment) Trees4Travel logs the CCUs against the corporate’s emissions to help them stay on track. Trees4Travel buys CCUs so forest owners and local communities can maintain and conserve the forests. 3rd party standards measure CO2 absorption of established forests and issue CCU Certificates. Trees4Travel selects established and protected forests from around the world that offer ‘Certified Carbon Units’. Corporates buy CCUs from Trees4Travel and receive certificates that can be used for mandatory offsetting. CO2 > > > > Our current forest is an Amazonian conservation project of 40,000 hectares in Acre, Brazil which is validated to a gold level for climate adaptation, as well as delivering exceptional community and biodiversity benefits, conserving several vulnerable tree species along with numerous bird species. This land was previously going to be cleared for livestock rearing, however this project is now establishing alternative economic activities for the local communities including commercializing the collection of medicinal plants and acai (ah-sigh-EE) berries, a superfood, grape-like fruit. Certified Carbon Units CCUs 1 Certified Carbon Unit Offsets 1 ton of CO2 Emissions
  • 16. The tree planting organisation and local community maintain the saplings and trees. Trees4Travel monitor and report progress. Trees are scheduled for planting - locations are shared and supported with photos, video footage and satellite imaging. Trees4Travel calculates the CO2 absorbed – reporting to travelers and companies each month so they can see their emissions versus the absorption. Trees4Travel selects and vets tree planting organisations from around the world that focus on reforestation, biodiversity and local communities. Travelers and companies plant trees through Trees4Travel to offset their carbon emissions from their historic and up coming trips. CO2 > > > > Re-wilding our planet to mitigate climate change through carbon storage. Voluntary Carbon Units VCUs Plant 6 trees to offset approximately 1 ton of emissions with no intended use for compliance purposes
  • 17. How & where do we plant? The Tree Projects Our tree planting ethos is based on key objectives : • working closely with verified tree planting organisations from around the world who are experts in their local environments, involving local communities and all stakeholders • we plant a variety of tree species that are indigenous to a region to maximise biodiversity and restore natural ecosystems. • we prioritise reforestation projects which have the highest impact for the environment. NORTH AMERICA LATIN AMERICA EUROPE ASIA AUSTRALIA AFRICA
  • 18. Corporate ‘Legacy Forests’ Create A Corporate ‘Legacy Forest’ Corporates can show in a tangible, powerful way, their commitment to sustainability with their own ‘Legacy Forest’: • Multiple projects available - all continents. • Transactions are classed as ‘sponsorship’ (according to current UK accounting legislation) and are fully tax deductible. • Rotating widget can be added to corporate websites, to show our collective progress with number of trees planted + CO2 to be absorbed.
  • 19. Our Emissions CALCULATIONS are based on: • DEFRA The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs - UK. The government conversion factors for greenhouse gas reporting are for use by UK and international organisations to report on greenhouse gas emissions. • GHG Protocol The Greenhouse Gas Protocol Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standard provides calculation tools, requirements and guidance for companies and other organizations preparing a corporate-level GHG emissions inventory. • IPCC The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change is the United Nations body for assessing the science related to climate change - 195 member countries. AND Cover all types of transport such as air, train, ferry, car and trucks & all fuel types. Accommodation such as hotel and rentals. Accurate Emissions Calculations
  • 20. How does it work? We aim to offset a trip’s emissions within 10 years. The trees then go on offsetting for another 140 + years! Corporates can start the process by offsetting any past travel. Simple Steps to ‘Historic Offset’ Simply send previous travel data to be offset We’ll do the maths and send you a quote We’ll plant trees to offset your clients CO2 emissions 1 2 3 Historic Offset 2019 2018 2017 2016

  • 27. Market size in different sectors Hotels 4.65 Billion Room Nights per year Airlines 4.4 Billion Passengers per year Car Hire 3 Billion Rental days per year Trains 31 Billion Passenger trips per year (all trip types Europe alone) Enormous Positive Environmental Impact Potential From Travel • Travel is one of the biggest industries in the world. • Tourism is a major driver of the world economy, accounting for 7% of international trade. • The market size in the different travel sectors shows the enormous potential. • Insignificant price, compared to travel purchase. • Sustainable, mindful travel needs to be the future of all travel. Pre Covid-19 Figures
  • 28. Sustainable Travel Community Sharing Responsibility • We are creating a collaboration of travel suppliers at every touchpoint of a journey - from TMC to ground transport, to airports & airlines to hotels & rental accommodation. • Corporates can purchase trees through their TMC to share responsibility. • Partners can help by allowing travelers to exchange loyalty points for trees. • Enabling a shared responsibility between the traveler & each supplier of a trip, ensuring all are on the same page, helping towards the same goal of carbon neutrality.
  • 29. Airlines Impact Airline Offsets • 4.3 billion airline passengers per year (2019) • 880 billion kilos of CO2 produced by air travel (2019) • If passengers purchase just 1.5 trees each time they fly, air transport could be neutral within 10 years, in fact NEGATIVE after that, pulling more CO2 out of the air than emitted. • Trees keep absorbing as more flights are made and as more trees are planted - there will be a point in time when there is more CO2 being offset than created. New York to Chicago + 2 Hotel Nights = 3 Trees (To offset within 10 years ) Based on 2019 Figures: If Every Passenger Purchased Just 1.5 Trees With Each Flight – Regardless of Distance or Class CO2 emitted by Air Travel CO2 absorbed by Trees N e g a t i v e C O 2 B a l a n c e Years - Age of Trees & Air Travel Over Time CO2 Emitted minus CO2 Absorbed
  • 30. Trains The Most Sustainable Travel • Travelling 1,000 miles by train produces 41 kgs of CO2 per passenger. • Rail Transport is currently the most environment - friendly way to travel other than cycling or walking. • A typical train line can carry 50,000 people per hour. Compare this with a motorway, which can move only 2,500 people per hour. London to Paris + 3 Hotel Nights = 1 Tree ( to offset within 10 years )
  • 31. Road Transport LA to Las Vegas + 2 Hotel Nights = 2 Tree • If you travel 1,000 miles by car alone, you would emit 275 kgs of CO2. • 1 tree will offset the CO2 from 200 miles of trips – costing less than a penny per mile. Motor Vehicle Offsets ( to offset within 10 years )
  • 32. • Travel needs a new ‘green’ focus - a focus that is integral to health, wellbeing and the planet. • We are beyond safe levels of carbon in our atmosphere. • The United Nations has stated that we have 10 years to fix this. • Reforestation is overwhelmingly more powerful than all other climate change solutions. • 72% of travelers believe we need to act now and make sustainable travel choices. • Our aim is to help all travelers cover their footprints within 10 years. • Trees4Travel is the perfect product, message and ‘green’ partner, at the right time. What we know…
