The ELAC Team Project conducted action research to identify limitations to online student learning and interventions to address them. They surveyed students and found the primary limitations were lack of time, math anxiety, and difficulty with word problems. The team set up a Facebook site and library workshop for collaboration. Students who participated in Facebook had higher grades. The researchers also analyzed a chemistry class, finding students' limitations were math anxiety, word problems, and lack of confidence. Interventions like tutorials, study groups, and guided workshops increased the class average by 10%. The researchers recommend the college offer math review workshops and tutoring to build confidence.

The Tertiary Enabling Program (TEP) at Charles Darwin University is a semester long university preparation program for students unable to directly enter undergraduate study. With a cohort consisting of 80% of students studying online, Blackboard plays a central role in engaging and enabling TEP students with the necessary skills and knowledge for undergraduate study. To increase student engagement in TEP, a number of initiatives have been put in place this year designed to maximise the use of interactive digital technologies and changing pedagogies. One of the main drivers for these new initiatives was the analysis of data captured in Blackboard showing that early engagement by students increases their likelihood of successfully completing TEP as well as identifying critical points of engagement during the semester.
To maximise early engagement and prepare students for TEP studies, the first week of study for all new TEP students has been devoted to a new online initiative called TEP Start which is the focus of this presentation. TEP Start was specifically developed for the online learner to improve the student experience, build their confidence and give them the skills to succeed. TEP Start was developed with the expectation that students would engage and interact with the learning materials on Blackboard, thus moving away from the traditional method of ‘content based’ online learning. This online engagement includes classes hosted in Collaborate Ultra, game-based learning activities and short micro-lectures. Hosted on a dedicated Blackboard site, TEP Start was specifically developed using design principles such as colour coding, visual hierarchy, repetition, images, icons in addition to limited text; all to direct the student’s eye to what is important and to influence how they interact with the content.
The initial results of the TEP Start initiative are highly encouraging. The majority of students completed all components of TEP Start and the feedback from students and staff on TEP Start is overwhelmingly positive.
Adding Audio Feedback Using Vocaroo in Online Courses: Does it Add Value?

This workshop will share best practice from other global practitioners on how the Echo360 system can transform the lecture experience for staff and students. By focusing on how this can improve student satisfaction, retention and outcomes, it also strongly relates to the other theme of ‘supporting student success’
The relevance of the lecture in mainstream education is now under greater scrutiny as institutions seek to make educational programmes more relevant to a new generation of discerning learners (JISC, 2016). When we teach in class, how do you know who is confused, who is bored, who hasn’t even bothered to attend, and perhaps more importantly, who has learnt anything? And how can we engage with learners beyond the classroom to stimulate inquiry, collaboration and feedback in a seamless educational experience?
This workshop will demonstrate how one answer is to reinvent the lecture, by integrating powerful new video, engagement and analytics tools, whilst retaining the valued teacher-learner interaction in teaching spaces. The Echo360 active learning platform empowers learners to engage more fully with teachers and each other before, during and after class. This approach to teaching also equips instructors with vital feedback on how learners are progressing, with powerful engagement metrics giving staff rare insights into the teaching-learning dynamic of a lecture (Rienties & Toetenel, 2016).
Evidence is now emerging that this mode of teaching can have a significant impact on critical learning measures, such as early warning of student failure (Samson, 2016), boosting retention (HEC, 2016), whilst increasing learning gain and exam scores (Montpetit, 2015). Students also value their ability to control the pace, place and mode of their learning (Gosper et al, 2008; Leadbeater et al, 2013), whilst receiving more immediate feedback on their progress (JISC, 2016).
Together, these flexible pedagogical tools have the potential to transform learning in all modes of teaching and training, both in the class and beyond.

Some benefits of using OERs include saving students money, giving instructors more options for course materials, and improving educational resources as more contributors are involved. However, challenges exist as well - OER materials may not always be of high quality despite being free, resources can become obsolete without maintenance, and not all student needs may be met with available open options. Quality assurance and awareness of what OERs are also present challenges.

Beginning in 2016, Nossal High School began to focus its professional learning for staff on the use of Microsoft OneNote as complementary teaching and learning software to the MH Blackboard Learn environment we have run for the last 5 years. In this time, the speed and depth of the take up of OneNote and its impact on the teaching and learning experience of staff and students has been dramatic. Not only have our students fully embraced OneNote from a learners' perspective, all teaching and support staff are using Microsoft OneNote to record their own professional development, maintaining an ongoing conversation with the college executive and collecting evidence for their personal records.
This rapid adoption has forced us to consider closely what OneNote elements overlap with Bb Learn, which features are complementary with Bb Learn and ultimately, what part these two software solutions will have within our overall teaching and learning program.
During the presentation, I will be looking at the features of Bb Learn and OneNote that we intend to keep unique to each environment, as well as the elements that we are comfortable in having some overlap. Our overall aim is to ensure we are promoting to staff the most effective software solution for any given purpose whilst ensuring our students are not confused about the location of resources and information from class to class.
I will conclude with what we currently see as the most effective arrangement for the use of these two software packages going forward.

Confessions of an ex-librarian: research support across divisional borders

The study concludes that the validity and reliability of online testing in MOOCs could be improved by avoiding these flawed question structures and following best practices for writing high-quality MCQs.

This workshop will share best practice from other global practitioners on how the Echo360 system can transform the lecture experience for staff and students. By focusing on how this can improve student satisfaction, retention and outcomes, it also strongly relates to the other theme of ‘supporting student success’
The relevance of the lecture in mainstream education is now under greater scrutiny as institutions seek to make educational programmes more relevant to a new generation of discerning learners (JISC, 2016). When we teach in class, how do you know who is confused, who is bored, who hasn’t even bothered to attend, and perhaps more importantly, who has learnt anything? And how can we engage with learners beyond the classroom to stimulate inquiry, collaboration and feedback in a seamless educational experience?
This workshop will demonstrate how one answer is to reinvent the lecture, by integrating powerful new video, engagement and analytics tools, whilst retaining the valued teacher-learner interaction in teaching spaces. The Echo360 active learning platform empowers learners to engage more fully with teachers and each other before, during and after class. This approach to teaching also equips instructors with vital feedback on how learners are progressing, with powerful engagement metrics giving staff rare insights into the teaching-learning dynamic of a lecture (Rienties & Toetenel, 2016).
Evidence is now emerging that this mode of teaching can have a significant impact on critical learning measures, such as early warning of student failure (Samson, 2016), boosting retention (HEC, 2016), whilst increasing learning gain and exam scores (Montpetit, 2015). Students also value their ability to control the pace, place and mode of their learning (Gosper et al, 2008; Leadbeater et al, 2013), whilst receiving more immediate feedback on their progress (JISC, 2016).
Together, these flexible pedagogical tools have the potential to transform learning in all modes of teaching and training, both in the class and beyond.

Quality assurance and awareness of what OERs are also present challenges.

Beginning in 2016, Nossal High School began to focus its professional learning for staff on the use of Microsoft OneNote as complementary teaching and learning software to the MH Blackboard Learn environment we have run for the last 5 years. In this time, the speed and depth of the take up of OneNote and its impact on the teaching and learning experience of staff and students has been dramatic. Not only have our students fully embraced OneNote from a learners' perspective, all teaching and support staff are using Microsoft OneNote to record their own professional development, maintaining an ongoing conversation with the college executive and collecting evidence for their personal records.
This rapid adoption has forced us to consider closely what OneNote elements overlap with Bb Learn, which features are complementary with Bb Learn and ultimately, what part these two software solutions will have within our overall teaching and learning program.
During the presentation, I will be looking at the features of Bb Learn and OneNote that we intend to keep unique to each environment, as well as the elements that we are comfortable in having some overlap. Our overall aim is to ensure we are promoting to staff the most effective software solution for any given purpose whilst ensuring our students are not confused about the location of resources and information from class to class.
I will conclude with what we currently see as the most effective arrangement for the use of these two software packages going forward.

The question is how much longer will they be there? Not even Coursera’s founder Daphne Koller could anticipate the scale and impact of the MOOCs.
Udacity, Coursera and edX, aka ‘The Big Three’ have crossed the barrier of 40 million active students. What does it mean for traditional universities? MIT’s president Raphael Reif struggles to see how his institution can carry on justifying charging $50,0000 for tuition much longer and that is a big problem not only for them for many other universities that are starting to see their numbers dwindling.
