Course management systems, also known as learning management systems or LMS, allow students to take educational courses online and collaborate over the internet. Two popular free systems are Moodle and Rcampus, which allow teachers and students to access coursework, have discussions, and complete assignments and quizzes. Online learning benefits at-risk, gifted, mobile, and ill students by providing 24/7 access to materials. It also allows differentiation of instruction and uses of various online tools and media to improve understanding. A combination of flexibility, independence, and experience with online tools can improve critical thinking, research, and computer skills.
