A Neglected Aspect of Education in Pakistan
Given the significant role that textbooks play in many countries of the developing world, the presentation highlights issues related to the use of the textbook in rural Pakistan, and identifies ways to improve upon current practices. The findings presented in this presentation emerge from my analysis of teachers’ experiences and practices related to the use of textbooks in schools. Since the existing knowledge base is limited on teachers’ actual use of the textbook, the presentation attempts to fill in this gap by highlighting the various issues related to teachers’ perceptions and practices. These include teachers’ limited use of textbooks, access to textbooks, information gaps and limitations of textbooks – all working to restrict the use of the textbook as a learning resource. The presentation concludes by offering recommendations on improving textbook usage in Pakistan.

Promoting Open Access and Open Educational Resources to FacultyNASIG

Student debt is a compelling issue and many institutions are investigating solutions to ease the financial burdens of their students. Increasing the use of open educational resources benefits students by reducing course costs. Adopting OER in the classroom allows faculty more freedom in choosing instructional tools. Faculty also benefit from open access publishing by increasing their exposure. However, on the campus of a small, private institution, attendance at workshops to spread awareness and increase the use of these materials was minimal. Faculty had the perception that free resources could not be the same quality as traditional resources. In order to dispel this myth, the Electronic Resources Librarian and Educational Technology Manager collaborated to create custom one hour sessions for individual departments, leveraging library/faculty liaison relationships and the expertise of the office of educational technology. In the session, faculty learn more about open access publishing options, the value of open educational resources, the quality of many open educational resources, and where to find these resources. The session uses the course management system to both disseminate the information shared in the session and create a forum for departments to share resources with each other. Through the CMS, faculty gain access to vetted resources. All attendants have editing privileges within the site after the workshop, allowing them to curate course-specific lists for sharing and future reference. Pilot sessions have been well received and wider implementation is planned for the next academic year.

Marilyn Billings, Scholarly Communication & Special Initiatives Librarian, University of Massachusetts Amherst Libraries. Marilyn coordinates the Open Education Initiative, which has saved students more than $750,000 since 2011 by working with faculty to identify low-cost and free alternatives to expensive textbooks.
Kristi Jensen, Program Development Lead, eLearning Support Initiative, University of Minnesota Libraries. The University of Minnesota has emerged as a national leader through its Open Textbook Library, which is a searchable catalog of more than 100 open textbooks. The Libraries also partnered with other entities on campus for their Digital Course Pack project, which has helped streamline the course pack process and make materials more affordable for students.
Shan Sutton, Associate University Librarian for Research and Scholarly Communication, Oregon State University Libraries. The OSU libraries are partnering with the OSU Press for a pilot program to develop open access textbooks by OSU faculty members. The program issued an RFP in the fall, and recently announced four winning proposals that will be published in 2014-2015.
Recent research conducted by the OER Research Hub indicates that nearly 60% of community college faculty choose OER and open textbooks based on the reputation of the institution or recommendations from trusted colleagues. Join us on Wed, February 5, at 11:00 am (PT), 2:00 pm (ET) to hear about three high-quality open textbook publishing initiatives, one through the State University of New York (SUNY), another through OpenStax College at Rice University, and finally one at the University of Minnesota. Our featured speakers will share their experiences with publishing open textbooks for use by both faculty and students and share their open textbook adoption strategies.
Cyril Oberlander, Director of Library Services at SUNY Geneseo heads up the SUNY Open Textbook initiative which publishes high-quality, cost-effective course resources by engaging faculty as authors and peer-reviewers, and libraries as a publishing service and infrastructure. They have released three open textbooks this last fall in their planned series of fifteen open textbooks in various disciplines.
David Harris, Editor-in-chief OpenStax College at Rice University’s Connexions project. OpenStax College is a nonprofit organization committed to improving student access to quality learning materials. Their free textbooks are developed and peer-reviewed by educators to ensure they are readable, accurate, and meet the scope and sequence requirements of college courses. Their first six books released over the last two years are focused on general education courses and are gaining adoptions.
David Ernst, Chief Information Officer, College of Education and Human Development, at University of Minnesota. Dr. Ernst spent the last two years identifying barriers to the adoption of open textbooks and finding ways to help institutions and faculty overcome those barriers. He created the Open Textbook Library in April, 2012, as a single source for faculty to find open textbooks.
The Open Textbook Network: libraries working together to advance open textbooksSarah Cohen
Over the last three years, the Open Textbook Library, now hosting upwards of 175 complete open textbook titles, has built these titles’ credibility and increased faculty exposure to open textbooks by incentivizing textbook reviews by faculty from institutions across the country. Libraries have been at the core of our outreach and are our most integral partners in reaching faculty and building capacity on campuses for open textbooks. At the invitation of our partner libraries, we’ve visited dozens of schools to seed and support their open education programs. As a result, our partner institutions’ data shows that over 40% of their faculty attendees to our workshops adopt an open textbook. This small pilot group of faculty has saved students over $410,000 in textbook costs in less than three years.
This presentation will introduce attendees to the Open Textbook Network - a consortium of institutions working to help faculty overcome barriers to adoption of open textbooks, increase institutional capacity to support faculty adoption and use of open textbooks, and collaboratively develop new understandings and best practices of open textbook adoption and use. Attendees will learn more about what’s to come for the Open Textbook Library, our partners, our data, and why open textbooks are a sustainable avenue towards initiating and sustaining open education programming.

For Presenation at ACRL, Friday, March 13, 2009: The Champlain College Library asked students from our Electronic Game Design Program and the Emergent Media Center to create a game to complement our Information Literacy (IL) program. Little did we know that this collaboration would lead us to question and re-envision what we mean by information literacy. Through the library-student collaboration, it became clear to the Library that words like authority, credibility, reliability, and currency were being used superficially. Clearly, our information literacy efforts needed to focus more on which factors were needed rather than prescribed. In a more abstract environment, like a game, the focus shifts from filling in the right answer to seeking and using the best information in a non-traditional context, as a demonstration of the game will show. Champlain’s IL program now encourages students to recognize and apply information literacy across multiple contexts. By identifying, discussing, and analyzing the information they use every day, students articulate their expectations and goals for the information they use. Those expectations and goals influence their information seeking in all situations, thereby bringing information literacy into students’ lives, not just their assignments. Game Design students’ reactions and understanding of information literacy have shaped the pedagogical approach to information literacy on our campus. Our information literacy program capitalizes and expands on students’ prepossessed knowledge and asks them to be cognizant of these skills in all situations. In doing so, we have an information literacy program that we think will make a difference in students’ lives.
Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
