Our Strategic Framework
and Principles
• People in the Lead
• “What’s matters to us,
not what’s the matter
with us”
• Asking “What’s strong
not what’s wrong”

3 priorities
• Managing our own
environmental impact
• Supporting our grant-
holders to become
greener
• Committing an additional
£100m in grant funding
to tackle climate change

Greening our Grant-holders
First Steps:- testing and learning
8. 8 Climate Action Fund
Climate Action Fund
The Climate Action Fund will support communities in the UK to take local action on climate change.
These communities will stand as beacons of what is possible when people take the lead on climate
change.
Additional £100 million over 10 years
• We will support communities to make the changes they believe will help them take action on climate
change.
• The Climate Action Fund aims to support community-led, local partnerships that will drive change not
only within but also beyond their community, to:
• Reduce their carbon footprint sustainably
• Increase participation in community-led climate action.
• Network of communities
• Building a movement
9. 9 Climate Action Fund
First round of funding
• Opened to FOIs 4th November, close on 18th December
• We will only give between 10 to 15 awards in the first phase of funding
• First awards will be announced by the middle of 2020
• Looking for community-led, local partnerships that will drive change within
and beyond their community
• Successful applicants will already have plans or impactful activities they
want to develop
• Successful applicants will be expected to fully participate in our ambition
to share learning and engage others to build a broader movement of change
10. 10 Climate Action Fund
What are we looking for?
• Place based
• Community led
• Partnerships – cross sector
• High impact – sustainable energy, sustainable transport, consumption (food
& waste), natural environment
• Sustainable – behaviour change
• Reach
• Learning & engagement
11. 11 Climate Action Fund
Funding available
• Longer term funding
• But with a flexible approach
• This might include, in the first instance:
• Initial grants of up to £200k over 18 months to support communities who need
more time to develop their partnership, engage more widely and test their
approaches
• Awards of up to £2.5m over 5 years to support communities who might be able to
start longer-term plans at an earlier stage
• Only the first round of funding
• Learning from the first round of funding to help shape what happens in the
future
12. 12
Reflections and Provocations
• Engage on the terms of those you seek to work with
• To inspire of require that is the question?
• “Nothing about us, without us, is for us”
13. 13 Greening Grant-holders: How funders can lead the way for a sustainable future
Discussion Points
1. How might we best balance inspiration and requirements for applicants to take environmental
action? What might good look like?
2. In your experience, what are the barriers to engagement for applicants? And what are the solutions?
3. Should we be broadly targeting communities, or those with the biggest environmental impact (who are
often more affluent)?
4. We are living in times of polarisation. What opportunity does the climate crisis and civic action
offer for uniting rather than dividing communities?
