The STARS Foundation provides unrestricted funding and consultancy support to local NGOs working on children's issues in developing countries. Of organizations applying to STARS' funding programs, 52% had no unrestricted funding at all and over 66% cited funding practices as a major challenge. STARS aims to scale up its funding programs to support 125 organizations helping 2 million children annually by 2020. It takes a partnership approach focused on empowering organizations through flexible funding and capacity building support.

Future of Philanthropy – Updated View and Global Discussions
We are very pleased that the Future of High Impact Philanthropy project has already gained excellent momentum globally. This post shares extras insights already added to the programme from the first 3 workshops in Mumbai, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur plus 3 events in the UK
Building on the previous post this is an updated perspective on some of the key issues facing the increasingly interconnected areas of philanthropy and impact investing over the next decade. As well as insights from the initial view authored earlier this year by Prof. Cathy Pharoah of CASS Business School, this includes comments by experts in Singapore, the UK, US and UAE, as well as from the Skoll World Forum held last week in Oxford. Together, the 50-plus views provide a great platform for us to build on in the discussions ahead.
All in all, with another 12 events engaging with over 300 experts from around the world, combined with additional contributions via social media, this major open foresight project is set up to provide a terrific view of how high impact philanthropy will evolve and what will be the likely implications both globally and regionally.

Since 2008, Hattaya Wongsaengpaiboon has been working at VSO, an international development charity whose volunteers work with local organizations to improve poor people’s lives.
Working with professional volunteers, migrant community members, community based organizations, international organizations and Thailand’s Ministries, Hattaya brings corporate experience to the development field where is has found her passion. She will be addressing the benefits of corporate volunteering; including staff motivation, team spirit and employee retention, as well as community impact.
Hattaya holds a Bachelor Degree in Law from Thammasat University.

The seminar focused on the research topic of bridging the missing middle in entrepreneurial finance in South Africa through developing angel investor networks. It gave an overview of the research on how these groups work in the USA as well as research ideas on how this could be done in South Africa.

They discussed how impact investing has matured with greater mainstream interest in products focusing on environmental, social and governance factors. Measurement of social and environmental impacts is now common practice. However, questions remain about whether philanthropic dollars are being redirected from donations to impact investments, and if nonprofits will face rising competition from social enterprises for impact investment funds. The panel also explored how impact measurement trends could influence nonprofits to target these investors as potential funding sources.

Local Alike is a social enterprise in Thailand that focuses on community-based tourism as a tool for community development. It connects sustainable travelers with local communities, identifies community needs, and helps communities prepare tourism services. Local Alike has worked with over 200 communities and 65,000 travelers since 2014. It aims to expand to more countries in Southeast Asia and develop an ambassador program and backend system to support its growth while ensuring at least 70% of revenues go back to partner communities.

5-hydroxytryptamine or 5-HT or Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that serves a range of roles in the human body. It is sometimes referred to as the happy chemical since it promotes overall well-being and happiness.
It is mostly found in the brain, intestines, and blood platelets.
5-HT is utilised to transport messages between nerve cells, is known to be involved in smooth muscle contraction, and adds to overall well-being and pleasure, among other benefits. 5-HT regulates the body's sleep-wake cycles and internal clock by acting as a precursor to melatonin.
It is hypothesised to regulate hunger, emotions, motor, cognitive, and autonomic processes.
Cell Therapy Expansion and Challenges in Autoimmune Disease
There is increasing confidence that cell therapies will soon play a role in the treatment of autoimmune disorders, but the extent of this impact remains to be seen. Early readouts on autologous CAR-Ts in lupus are encouraging, but manufacturing and cost limitations are likely to restrict access to highly refractory patients. Allogeneic CAR-Ts have the potential to broaden access to earlier lines of treatment due to their inherent cost benefits, however they will need to demonstrate comparable or improved efficacy to established modalities.
In addition to infrastructure and capacity constraints, CAR-Ts face a very different risk-benefit dynamic in autoimmune compared to oncology, highlighting the need for tolerable therapies with low adverse event risk. CAR-NK and Treg-based therapies are also being developed in certain autoimmune disorders and may demonstrate favorable safety profiles. Several novel non-cell therapies such as bispecific antibodies, nanobodies, and RNAi drugs, may also offer future alternative competitive solutions with variable value propositions.
Widespread adoption of cell therapies will not only require strong efficacy and safety data, but also adapted pricing and access strategies. At oncology-based price points, CAR-Ts are unlikely to achieve broad market access in autoimmune disorders, with eligible patient populations that are potentially orders of magnitude greater than the number of currently addressable cancer patients. Developers have made strides towards reducing cell therapy COGS while improving manufacturing efficiency, but payors will inevitably restrict access until more sustainable pricing is achieved.
Despite these headwinds, industry leaders and investors remain confident that cell therapies are poised to address significant unmet need in patients suffering from autoimmune disorders. However, the extent of this impact on the treatment landscape remains to be seen, as the industry rapidly approaches an inflection point.
