It challenges library staff to reconsider their role in information literacy and how to ensure students and teachers are equipped to navigate the new information landscape. It asks for experts in contemporary information literacy issues, such as online identity, digital rights, social networking, personalisation and collaborative content, rather then expatriates continuing to do things as they did in ‘the old country’?

New scientific instruments such as the Square Kilometre Array and developments such as Brexit are likely to increase the institutional requirement for enhanced digital services to locations overseas.
This will require increased collaboration amongst the providers of the campus, national, and international networks and other e-infrastructures. In this session we will look at ways in which Jisc and its international peers are working to connect the global education and research communities that they serve.

However, these projects and initiatives have not been throw away experiments. Rather, they have helped inform the University’s new Digital Education Strategy aimed at meeting the needs and improving the experience of its students and researchers at a time when the idea and purpose of the university is being challenged.
This provides an overview of some of the innovative projects and initiatives the University of Lincoln has undertaken in the past few years and how universities can explore approaches to teaching and research support, while helping inform the institutional mission and strategy. It will also provide an opportunity for managers, learning technologists and teachers to discuss the potential for such an approach at their institution and to share relevant experiences and ideas.

In the next few years, the further development of social, educational and research networks – with its extensive collaborative possibilities – will be dictating how users will search for, manage and exchange information. Taking innovation from concept through to scalable delivery is complex, contested and under-theorised process. This report aims to capture the current major themes underpinning scaling, and apply these to the context of the Learning Layers project. An external review of our early ‘Design Research framework for scaling’ has highlighted that the approach is too linear and may rely too heavily on the diffusion of innovation paradigm originally proposed by Everett Rogers in the 1960s, which is less appropriate for scaling innovations in our project. Rather, we start out from design-based research principles where co-design with the users is producing both theories and practical educational interventions as outcomes of the process. This is a robust and appropriate approach suitable for addressing complex problems in educational practice for which no clear guidelines or solutions are available. We suggest that it is therefore also appropriate for multi-faceted and complex research projects such as Learning Layers.

This presentation calls for designs of new social media to fill the gap of learner communication and collaboration in current Educational Resources (OER) movement. While various OER projects have created a vast ocean of quality learning materials, comparably little effort has been put on nurturing a learner community around a single or multiple OER repositories. The Knowledge Building pedagogy which emphasizes social and cultural aspects of learning could come in and play a role in this movement. No design idea has been discussed in this presentation, but many questions that have to be answered are put forward for discussion.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
