The Big Migration: How Cerner Moved From Confluence 3.5 to 5.8Atlassian
Cerner uses Confluence for just about everything. To support all of these use cases they created loads of custom features and plugins. With a focus on customization, upgrades fell behind. By the time Confluence 5.8 was released they had a lot of work to do to upgrade.
With the help of a Technical Account Manager, and partnering with Comalatech they were able to upgrade with no downtime. This helped them create a disaster recovery instance, which is a key component for controlled documentation. With their upgrade, they added the ability to go through a certified approval process with reporting capability.

Improving Cybersecurity and Resilience Through Acquisition Emile Monette GSAGovCloud Network
When the government purchases products or services with inadequate in-built “cybersecurity,” the risks created persist throughout the lifespan of the item purchased. The lasting effect of inadequate cybersecurity in acquired items is part of what makes acquisition reform so important to achieving cybersecurity and resiliency.
Currently, government and contractors use varied and nonstandard practices, which make it difficult to consistently manage and measure acquisition cyber risks across different organizations.
Meanwhile, due to the growing sophistication and complexity of ICT and the global ICT supply chains, federal agency information systems are increasingly at risk of compromise, and agencies need guidance to help manage ICT supply chain risks

Learning Rust the Hard Way for a Production Kafka + ScyllaDB PipelineScyllaDB
Numberly operates business-critical data pipelines and applications where failure and latency means "lost money" in the best-case scenario. Most of their data pipelines and applications are deployed on Kubernetes and rely on Kafka and ScyllaDB, with Kafka acting as the message bus and ScyllaDB as the source of data for enrichment. The availability and latency of both systems are thus very important for data pipelines. While most of Numberly’s applications are developed using Python, they found a need to move high-performance applications to Rust in order to benefit from a lower-level programming language.
Learn the lessons from Numberly’s experience, including:
- Rationale in selecting a lower-level language
- Developing using a lower-level Rust code base
- Observability and analyzing latency impacts with Rust
- Tuning everything from Apache Avro to driver client settings
- How to build a mission-critical system combining Apache Kafka and ScyllaDB
- Half a year Rust in production feedback
Software development is hard― keeping developers, testers, designers, product managers and other stakeholders in sync and working on the right things at the right time. Building the systems that customers care about and delivering high-quality code fast are challenges every development team faces. Just being agile isn’t enough; we need to actively think about how we can improve software development processes and techniques. Sven details Atlassian’s coding practices and team dynamics, which include: collaborating fast to develop ideas, helping QA with testing, avoiding meetings to get more work done, experimenting, tightening feedback loops to fail faster, shortening release cycles, and working together happily on different continents. He describes examples where Atlassian has failed, then tried a new concept and kicked ass. These practices make Atlassian developers among the most productive and satisfied in the industry. It's a great way to develop software, and Sven thinks it can work in your organization too.
Machine learning applications are typically stitched together from hopes and dreams, shell scripts, cron jobs, home-grown schedulers, snippets of configuration clipped from multiple blog posts, thousands of hard-coded business rules, a.k.a. "our SQL corpus," and a few lines of training and testing code. Organizing all the moving parts into something maintainable and supportive of ongoing development is a challenge most teams have on their TODO list, roadmap, or tech debt pile. Getting ahead of the day-to-day demands and settling into a sane architecture often seems like an unattainable goal. The past several years have seen an explosion of tool-building in the data engineering and analytics area, including in Apache projects spanning the areas of search and information retrieval, job orchestration, file and stream formats, and machine learning libraries. In this talk we will cover our product and development teams' choices of architecture and tools, from data ingestion and storage, through transformations and processing, to presentation of results and publishing to web services, reports, and applications.
Sildes of an internal talk given at Twitter similar to a previous webinar for Redhat with the same title.
Speeding up development is a key concern, cloud and technology improvements like Docker speed up key steps that make continuous delivery possible. Breaking up the work into many separate microservices and datastores with stable APIs allows teams to make progress independently so that the organization scales. Monolithic apps are preferred for small projects, built by small teams and when very low latency and high efficiency is the primary requirement. Monitoring microservices is currently a challenge with solutions starting to emerge.

Climate Science Flows: Enabling Petabyte-Scale Climate Analysis with the Eart...Globus
The Earth System Grid Federation (ESGF) is a global network of data servers that archives and distributes the planet’s largest collection of Earth system model output for thousands of climate and environmental scientists worldwide. Many of these petabyte-scale data archives are located in proximity to large high-performance computing (HPC) or cloud computing resources, but the primary workflow for data users consists of transferring data, and applying computations on a different system. As a part of the ESGF 2.0 US project (funded by the United States Department of Energy Office of Science), we developed pre-defined data workflows, which can be run on-demand, capable of applying many data reduction and data analysis to the large ESGF data archives, transferring only the resultant analysis (ex. visualizations, smaller data files). In this talk, we will showcase a few of these workflows, highlighting how Globus Flows can be used for petabyte-scale climate analysis.

How to Position Your Globus Data Portal for Success Ten Good PracticesGlobus
Science gateways allow science and engineering communities to access shared data, software, computing services, and instruments. Science gateways have gained a lot of traction in the last twenty years, as evidenced by projects such as the Science Gateways Community Institute (SGCI) and the Center of Excellence on Science Gateways (SGX3) in the US, The Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) and its platforms in Australia, and the projects around Virtual Research Environments in Europe. A few mature frameworks have evolved with their different strengths and foci and have been taken up by a larger community such as the Globus Data Portal, Hubzero, Tapis, and Galaxy. However, even when gateways are built on successful frameworks, they continue to face the challenges of ongoing maintenance costs and how to meet the ever-expanding needs of the community they serve with enhanced features. It is not uncommon that gateways with compelling use cases are nonetheless unable to get past the prototype phase and become a full production service, or if they do, they don't survive more than a couple of years. While there is no guaranteed pathway to success, it seems likely that for any gateway there is a need for a strong community and/or solid funding streams to create and sustain its success. With over twenty years of examples to draw from, this presentation goes into detail for ten factors common to successful and enduring gateways that effectively serve as best practices for any new or developing gateway.

In software engineering, the right architecture is essential for robust, scalable platforms. Wix has undergone a pivotal shift from event sourcing to a CRUD-based model for its microservices. This talk will chart the course of this pivotal journey.
Event sourcing, which records state changes as immutable events, provided robust auditing and "time travel" debugging for Wix Stores' microservices. Despite its benefits, the complexity it introduced in state management slowed development. Wix responded by adopting a simpler, unified CRUD model. This talk will explore the challenges of event sourcing and the advantages of Wix's new "CRUD on steroids" approach, which streamlines API integration and domain event management while preserving data integrity and system resilience.
Participants will gain valuable insights into Wix's strategies for ensuring atomicity in database updates and event production, as well as caching, materialization, and performance optimization techniques within a distributed system.
Join us to discover how Wix has mastered the art of balancing simplicity and extensibility, and learn how the re-adoption of the modest CRUD has turbocharged their development velocity, resilience, and scalability in a high-growth environment.
