oOne study found the rates of suicide in seven Muslim-
majority countries (Iran, Pakistan, Kuwait, Iraq, Syria,
Jordan, Egypt) were lower as compared to Western
countries. Even in non-Muslim countries the rates of
suicide in Muslims is lower than non-Muslims.
Statistical rate
o Pakistan's suicide rate is below the worldwide
average. Global rate(in 2015, 6.1) per 100,000.
Suicides represent some 0.9% of all deaths.
Pakistan's death rate by W.B(7.28 per 1000 people)
in 2016 (the lowest rate in the 2006-2018 period). In
2015, the suicide rate in Pakistan was approximately
1.4 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants, one seventh of
the global average.
o Pakistan Penal Code, with punitive laws imposed
for attempted suicide punishable by a fine of
Rs10,000 or imprisonment.
o The findings showed that males outnumber
females by a 2:1 rate and the majority of male
suicides tended to be unmarried.
(Khan, Murad Moosa; Reza, Hashim (2000). "The pattern of suicide in Pakistan". Crisis.)
o To determine rates we carried out an analysis of
suicide reports from six cities in Pakistan. Rates
vary from 0.43/100,000 in Peshawar to
2.86/100,000 in Rawalpindi. Rates for men are
higher than women; highest rates for men were
7.06/100,000 between the ages 20-40 years in
Larkana, Sindh province.
o The Nation (PIMS) last year 500 female suicide
cases (20 to 40 age)
o Research conducted in (AKMU) average number
of suicide is 7000-8000,whereas 70,000 to 150,000
people try to commit suicide in Pakistan.
