Student IT Education & Scholarship (SITES) Program in Huntsville, Alabama Bootstrap Computer Gaming Algorithm and Career Enrichment Program is a pilot program developed for 7th grade students through BDPA Huntsville chapter (president, Carol Bell). The Bootstrap Computer Gaming and Algorithm Career Enrichment Program is designed to teach students how to develop a video game that can be played on their mobile devices. BDPA is an international organization with a diverse membership of professionals and students at all levels in the fields of information technology, computer science and related Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields. This front-page article appeared in the Jan 2015 issue of the Union Chapel Christian Academy newsletter.

Overview - BDPA SITES Program
Earl Pace and David Wimberly founded BDPA in November 1975 as a local association. Within three years, the founders grew BDPA into a national organization with chapters in Philadelphia, Washington DC and Cleveland.
Today, there are 45 chapters throughout the United States. One part of the BDPA legacy is our Student Information Technology & Scholarship (SITES) program. This is a program that enriches the educational opportunities for our students in an after-school program of technology training with a focus on low-and moderate-income communities.
BDPA established the Student Information Technology & Scholarship (SITES) program to teach advanced computer science and community responsibility to students from historically disadvantaged communities. BDPA has provided meaningful STEM experiences to over 10,000 since the beginning of the SITES program … with over 1,700 students having a chance to compete in our national High School Computer Competition (HSCC) championships. We are proud to have given out over 150 college scholarships to well-deserving students in our SITES program.
There are three major components of our SITES program that impact on the educational future of K-12 students:
1. Computer Camps
2. High School Computer Competition (HSCC)
3. IT Showcase
Most of our 45 local BDPA chapters run youth education programs that provide science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) curriculum and experiences on Saturdays for young people of color. These training programs host an average of 24 students for anywhere for up to 20 weeks and inspire our young people to become interested in BDPA and in the potential of a future course of study that focuses on STEM-based building blocks.

Developing games and web applications for social impact moves students from drills and assignments to authentic experiences that has led to community partnerships, internships, and employment opportunities.
Lauderhill 6-12, a Title 1 combo school in Broward County is where students develop online tools and games that address relevant needs of neighborhood families and the local community. Student motivation, excitement, and engagement have improved knowing that their original ideas can help others and with investor support original ideas can come to fruition. Student work has been recognized by Entertainment Software Association (ESA), Oracle Technologies, and the Greater Fort Lauderdale Alliance.
Participants will hear and take away strategies on how to reduce obstacles, pilot programs, and build relationships in order to create a culture of creating through computer science. Participants will hear and take away strategies on how to take advantage of community resources, national events, non-profits and pipe them through a sieve of student interest and game development that results in a culture of games, apps, fun, and learning.
Notes:
Teaching in a Title 1 school has plenty of challenges for students and educators. The lives of our students address a glut of issues a lot more pressing than homework assignments; they have a lot more on their mind than common core standards. Having worked in Title 1 schools during my 26 years as an educator I believe in the power of creating and critical thinking through games, mobile apps, and web applications. By enabling and empowering students, I have been able to see the increase of motivation, engagement, and attendance. While this experience does not remove the weight of home issues, it does provide a source of ownership, accomplishment, and community. Participants will hear and take away strategies on how to reduce obstacles, pilot programs, and build relationships in order to create a culture of creating through computer science. Participants will hear and take away strategies on how to take advantage of community resources, national events, non-profits and pipe them through a sieve of student interest and game development that results in a culture of games, apps, fun, and learning.

Coupled with the increasing enabling of application development and deployment by Senior School students, such as in the creation and deployment of mobile games using Corona and Lua for example, students are able to be powerfully enabled as creative producers, not just passive users.
The presentation will give an overview of these areas of Computational Thinking and some outline of how they might be implemented in the curriculum, including current examples from senior IT classes in Queensland who are creating digital apps for Android devices.

Oracle Scholarship for BDPA Students
Oracle knows talented individuals drive success, and they are willing to encourage positive workforce development through organizations such as BDPA. As such, Oracle made decision to offer the 10th Annual Oracle Scholarship for BDPA Students again this year. The scholarship application period goes through July 15 2018.
These scholarships are available to high school students (grade 12), community college students and undergraduate college students. The student must be studying in STEM-related curriculum. The student must be a BDPA member in good standing on or before the July 15th deadline. BDPA student membership is $25 annually.
Past Oracle scholars were helped by this funding as well as the BDPA programs and services made available to them at the local chapter level. 31% of BDPA’s membership consists of college students. BDPA understands that its educational life cycle moves from the classroom to the boardroom. A major element of the educational life cycle resides with college students. Annual membership dues for college students are only $25 … a significant savings from the annual membership dues that adult professionals invest in BDPA membership.

Most of our 46 local BDPA chapters run programs that provide science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) curriculum and experiences for young people of color in community colleges, 4-year colleges and vocational schools. These training programs include a monthly program meeting hosted by each local chapter that provides remarkable information from industry professionals as well as unique networking opportunities that are not replicated anywhere else in the community.
BDPA seeks to have more students in college studying STEM-related disciplines. BDPA created the BDPA Education and Technology Foundation (BETF) in 1992 for the purpose of giving college scholarships to deserving high school students. Over 250 college scholarships valued at over $550,000 have been handed out by BDPA and BETF. In addition, BDPA created two programs that feature college students - IT Showcase (2003) and Mobile Application Showcase (2014). BDPA began the process to bridge the ‘digital divide’ before the term was widely known. BDPA recognizes that to close the gap of computer and technology literacy, minority youth must participate and compete in today’s digital economy. Otherwise, our youth run the risk of being obsolete in America’s workforce.
The BDPA college student program is intellectually challenging and builds self-esteem through the mastery of applied computer science. We create a foundation for academic and career success.

The curriculum aims to develop students' technological proficiency through a project-based approach involving theoretical learning and hands-on laboratory work developing ideas and projects that apply to different fields. It is designed to equip students with skills for lifelong learning and an entrepreneurial spirit.
ELH School Tech 2013 - Computational Thinking
To be good ‘Computational Thinkers’ and hence effective users of, and more importantly empowered creators with Digital Technologies, students need to be conversant and articulate with:
algorithms;
cryptography;
machine intelligence;
computational biology;
search;
recursion;
heuristics;
Entrepreneurial enabling, and
The use of Digital Technologies to develop and support Critical Thinking skills.
While schools have taught many of these areas in the past, opportunities are now being presented where schools can fully embrace those areas traditionally part of a Computer Science type course, but also introduce the fascinating new areas of endeavor such as cryptography and computational biology.
Coupled with the increasing enabling of application development and deployment by Senior School students, such as in the creation and deployment of mobile games using Corona and Lua for example, students are able to be powerfully enabled as creative producers, not just passive users.
The presentation will give an overview of these areas of Computational Thinking and some outline of how they might be implemented in the curriculum, including current examples from senior IT classes in Queensland who are creating digital apps for Android devices.
This presentation will cover some of the ground from my ACEC 2012 talk on this topic (see SlideCast at this link: http://www.slideshare.net/StrategicITbyPFH/computational-thinking-14629222), but expand in a number of areas, in particular some specific suggestions regarding classroom implementation.

Oracle knows talented individuals drive success, and they are willing to encourage positive workforce development through organizations such as BDPA. As such, Oracle made decision to offer the 10th Annual Oracle Scholarship for BDPA Students again this year. The scholarship application period goes through July 15 2018.
These scholarships are available to high school students (grade 12), community college students and undergraduate college students. The student must be studying in STEM-related curriculum. The student must be a BDPA member in good standing on or before the July 15th deadline. BDPA student membership is $25 annually.
Past Oracle scholars were helped by this funding as well as the BDPA programs and services made available to them at the local chapter level. Do you know a high school or college student (or their parents!) who could benefit from this information? If so, please share this message with them right away. BDPA and College Students
Earl Pace and David Wimberly founded BDPA in November 1975 as a local association. Within three years, the founders grew BDPA into a national organization with chapters in Philadelphia, Washington DC and Cleveland. Today, there are 46 chapters throughout the United States. One part of the BDPA legacy is our program for college students and college campuses. This is a program that enriches the opportunities for our students in a variety of post-secondary education institutions with a focus on low-and moderate-income communities.
31% of BDPA’s membership consists of college students. BDPA understands that its educational life cycle moves from the classroom to the boardroom. A major element of the educational life cycle resides with college students. Annual membership dues for college students are only $25 … a significant savings from the annual membership dues that adult professionals invest in BDPA membership.
BDPA established the college student program to teach advanced computer science and community responsibility to students from historically disadvantaged communities. These are major components of our college student program that impact on the educational future of K-12 students:

Most of our 46 local BDPA chapters run programs that provide science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) curriculum and experiences for young people of color in community colleges, 4-year colleges and vocational schools. These training programs include a monthly program meeting hosted by each local chapter that provides remarkable information from industry professionals as well as unique networking opportunities that are not replicated anywhere else in the community.
BDPA seeks to have more students in college studying STEM-related disciplines. BDPA created the BDPA Education and Technology Foundation (BETF) in 1992 for the purpose of giving college scholarships to deserving high school students. Over 250 college scholarships valued at over $550,000 have been handed out by BDPA and BETF. In addition, BDPA created two programs that feature college students - IT Showcase (2003) and Mobile Application Showcase (2014). BDPA began the process to bridge the ‘digital divide’ before the term was widely known. BDPA recognizes that to close the gap of computer and technology literacy, minority youth must participate and compete in today’s digital economy. Otherwise, our youth run the risk of being obsolete in America’s workforce.
The BDPA college student program is intellectually challenging and builds self-esteem through the mastery of applied computer science. We create a foundation for academic and career success.
Eli Lilly Scholarship for BDPA Students (2018)
The Eli Lilly and Company/Black Data Processing Associates (Lilly/BDPA) Scholarship provides $2,500 scholarships to outstanding minority students pursuing degrees in information technology. To be eligible, applicants must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher and demonstrate leadership and community service. To apply, students must submit an application form, photo, transcript, 500-word essay on the impact of IT, and two recommendation letters by June 29th. Winners will be announced at the 2018 BDPA Technology Conference.
Johnson & Johnson Scholarship (2018)
I. Purpose
The Johnson & Johnson Scholarship is intended to provide financial assistance of a matriculated student, rising sophomore or higher enrolled at a 4 year accredited college/university full time. The objective of this scholarship is to support students who are committed to their academic studies and demonstrate evidence of being a good citizen as stated in the Johnson & Johnson Credo.
II. Criteria/Eligibility
An applicant must be a matriculated student, rising sophomore or higher, enrolled at a 4 year accredited college/university working full time towards their undergraduate degree within the US. The scholarship committee will review completed applications and awards will be made on the basis of the following criteria:
• Proven academic performance – minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0
• Strong and consistent community involvement
• Currently enrolled in a STEM-related major (with emphasis on Info Technology)
• Past recipients of this scholarship are not eligible to apply
III. Award Description
The Johnson & Johnson Scholarship Committee will award $2,500 one-time only scholarships for a rising sophomore or higher of 4 year accredited college or university.
IV. Application Deadline
The completed application, typed essay, two letters of recommendation, official transcript, and resume must be received by the Johnson & Johnson Scholarship Committee, please scan and send all documents via email to RA-JJCUS-BDPA@its.jnj.com no later than Sunday, June 1, 2018. Only complete packets will be accepted. Please do not send multiple emails with various documents. It is the sole responsibility of the applicant to take the necessary action and precautions to insure that the completed application packet is received by the deadline.

BDPA Cincinnati Computer Camp Orientation (2017)

ITSMF Educational Scholarship
BDPA Education and Technology Foundation (BETF) is proud to support Information Technology Senior Management Forum (ITSMF) Educational Scholarship Foundation. They seek to provide 5 scholarships to college-level students who are engaged in STEM-related disciplines. These scholarships will be awarded to students who have completed a minimum of 30 credit hours. Students are recognized for their academics, aptitude to lead and serve and their commitment to further their education.

Through an in-depth analysis of printed and electronic media, the study examines the impacts of these sacrifices on the academic and personal lives of those involved. The paper highlights examples from various universities, demonstrating student activism's long-term and short-term effects, including disciplinary actions, social backlash, and career implications. The researchers also explore the broader implications of student sacrifices. The findings reveal that these sacrifices are driven by a profound commitment to justice and human rights, and are influenced by the increasing availability of information, peer interactions, and personal convictions. The study also discusses the broader implications of this activism, comparing it to historical precedents and assessing its potential to influence policy and public opinion. The emotional and psychological toll on student activists is significant, but their sense of purpose and community support mitigates some of these challenges. However, the researchers call for acknowledging the broader Impact of these sacrifices on the future global movement of FreePalestine.

BDPA is an international organization with a diverse membership of professionals and stu- dents at all levels in the fields of information technology, computer science and related Science, Technology, Engi- neering and Mathematics (STEM) fields. This year BDPA celebrates its 40th anniversary in Washington, DC. The Bootstrap Computer Gaming and Algorithm Career Enrichment Program is designed to teach students how to develop a video game that can be played on their mo- bile devices. Students enrolled in the program learned game design, software development and conducted op- erational research on related fields to computer gaming (e.g. Graphic Designers, Information Technology Spe- cialists, Computer Gamers, Technical Writers). As a natural by product of the program, students learned how to develop product documentation. The students compiled a report that included an abstract, program overview, research results, their corresponding budget and bibliography. The students were taught basic MS Word functions including page and section breaks, out- lines, styles, headers, footers, page numbering, cross referencing and many more. Students were taught basic presentation skills. At program completion the students presented their work to their peers, school administra- tion, faculty and teachers. They employed MS Power- Point to develop their end of program presentations. Furthermore, the students were taught the relevance of the skills they gained as well as how to translate those skills into real world occupations and career fields. Stu- dents developed an actual monthly budget to introduce principles related to the relationship between salary and monthly and annual living expenses - correspondingly, the same relationship as it relates to choosing a career path to sustain their desired lifestyle. The participants in this exciting program were Ann- Terese Arreyako, Sky Atakoussok, Kameron Brazille and Mwaka Chilufya. These students created an indi- vidual game with their own players, dangers and tar- gets. The five month program met on Monday and Sat- urday and was taught by Ms. Carol Bell, BDPA Hunts- ville Chapter President, CEO of Spencer Cole, LLC and the Bootstrap Computer Gaming and Algorithm Career Prep Curriculum Developer; Miss Tiffany Tickles, pro- gram assistant teacher and Dr. Everett Roper, program teacher.
