DEFINITION
A restrictive clause conveys information that is
essential for understanding the meaning of the
sentence. A restrictive clause is like an adjective
because it helps to define a noun. it doesn’t use
comma.
 RESTRICTIVE CLAUSE
Relative pronoun used in restrictive clauses are wh-pronoun or
that:
Subject Object Possessive
For persons Who Whom/who Whose
That That
For things Which Which Whose/of which
That That
A) RESTRICTIVE CLAUSES :
Example :
1) The woman who robbed you has been arrested.
The word woman explain that there is only one
woman who robbed you.
2) The runner who reached the finish was very tired.
It means that only the runner who reached the finish
was very tired, and the other runners who don’t reach
the tip weren’t very tired.
 NON RESTRICTIVE CLAUSE
A nonrestrictive clause, on the other hand, contains
information that isn’t required to define the noun.
Anonrestrictive clause is set off from the independent
clause by commas
Subject Object Possessive
For persons Who Whom/who Whose
For things Which Which Whose/of which
Relative pronoun that used in non-restrictive clause is only wh-pronoun :
a) non-restrictive clause
Example:
1) The hikers, who reached the top, were very tired.
It means that only the hikers who reached
the top at that moment were very tired. But the
other hikers were also very tired.
2) john, who had been driving all day, suggested stopping
at the next town.
3) Justin, whom everyone suspected, turned out to be
innocent.
NOTE :Non-restrictive clause there just additional
information, don’t change the original meaning of the
sentence.
EXAMPLE
Use commas (non-rectrictive clause) Do not use commas (non restrictive
clause )
1. When the antecedent is restricted itself
Antecedents a proper noun
 Many people congratulated william faulker who
had just won the nobel prize for literature.
Antecedentsone of a kind
 The boy’s mother,who loves him very much,has
made many sacrifices for his happines.
 His aunt, who lives in california, came to visit him
recently (the adjective clause does not single out one aunt
from others. He may have only one aunt. )
Antecedents identified by the preceding context
Late in the evening they sent out for some coffee.(the
coffee, which had been boiling for a long time, tested rancid.)
1. When the antecedent refers to all of class
The chairs, which were in bad condition, were sent out
to be repaired and refinished.(all the chairs were in
bad condition.)
1. When the antecedent is restricted by adjective clause :
 Many people congratulated the man who had just won
the nobel prize for literature.
A mother who loves her son very much will make many
sacrifices for his happiness.
His aunt who lives in california came to visit him
recently.(He has more than one aunt.the adjective clause
designates which one is meant.)
Coffee which has been boiling for a long time will taste
rancid.
1. When the antecedent is limited by rhe adjective clause to
some of a class.
The chairs which were in bad condition were sent out to
be repaired and refinished.(some chairs were in bad
condition: the other were not)
Beware
Commas Affect the Meaning
The meaning of your sentence will be affected by your decision
whether to use commas around a clause. Both of the examples
below are grammatically sound, but they have slightly different
meanings.
example :
1. My cousins who live in the country are scared of sheep.
(This is a restrictive clause. It specifies that I'm
talking about my cousins from the country, i.e., not
my other cousins.)
2. My cousins, who live in the country, are scared of sheep.
(This suggests that all my cousins are scared of
sheep. As additional information, I've also told you
that they live in the country. We could delete that
clause if we wanted.)
This is the table of differences between restrictive and Non-
restrictive clause.
Restrictive clause Non-restrictive Clause
Wh-pronoun or that Only wh-pronoun
Highly relevant information Additional information
Comma cannot suround it/ do not use
comma
Commas may suround it/use comma
Cannot be omitted from a sentence Can be omitted from a sentence
