Difference between Method and
Approach
Approach
Approach is an attempt for an improvement in
teaching having general guidelines and
assumptions
It does not identify all the steps involved
it just indicates the direction to proceed
Method
Method refers to a step by step description of
tasks to be performed
Method is an overall plan based on some
approach

The Structural
Approach
Structure Approach
What is structure ???
Look at these sentences:
I am going to school.
Going I am school to.
A structure
is
the particular word order
or
arrangement of words.
So…
Structural Approach
lays stress on learning language
through structures
and
grammatical patterns.
Features
of
The Structural Approach
• Students are taught to master the pattern of
sentences.
• Mastery of structures is more important than
the acquisition of vocabulary.
• Speech is mainly stressed but reading and
writing are not neglected.
Presence of function words.
Use of a few inflections.
It is a way to teach English by using only of the
traditional method like grammar translation or direct
method etc.
