BACKGROUND 
The origins of Communicative Approach are found 
in the changes in the British language teaching 
tradition in the late 1960s. 
Situational Language Teaching (SLT) was the major 
approach to teaching English as a FL. 
Language was taught by practicing basic structures 
in meaningful situation-based activities.
What is the communicative 
approach? 
The communicative approach is the 
theory that language is 
communication. The Communicative 
Approach is regarded more as an 
approach.
Communicative Approach aims to 
• make communicative competence 
the goal of language teaching. The 
students are able to communicative 
competence, to speak English 
fluently and accurately.
The Principles of the 
Communicative Approach: 
Learners learn through using it to communicate 
Authentic and meaningful communication should 
be the goal of classroom activities 
Fluency is an important dimension of 
communication 
Communication involves the integration of 
different language skills 
Learning is a process of creative construction and 
involves trial and error

whenever possible the target language should be

STRENGHT 
It will increase students’ speaking skill 
Students are expected to interact with 
other people.

WEAKNESSES 
It can’t used in large class because the teacher 
will be difficult in controll the student’s 
activities.

error correction.
