Stress as Environmental Response and Individual Transaction
1. Stress as Environmental Response
Stress as transaction between individual and
Environment
Presented by
shantanu
2. Stress
• Stress is the nonspecific response of the body to any kind of demand
made upon it.
• Most often, stress is associated with negative situations, but good thing
also produce stress.
3. Cont..
• Reaction to stress and adjustment disorder
This category includes
• Acute stress reaction
• Post-traumatic stress disorder
• Adjustment disorder
4. Acute stress disorder
• It is a characterized by symptoms
like anxiety, despite and anger or
overactivity
• These symptoms are clearly
related to the stressor.
5. PTSD
• PTSD is of a reaction to extreme
stressor such as floods, earth
quack, war, rape or serious
physical assaults.
• The symptoms may develop after
a period of latency, within 6
months after the stress or may be
delayed.
6. Sign and symptoms
• Depression
• Startles easily
• Insomnia, recurring distressing dreams
• Mental reruns of the event
7. Adjustment disorder
• It is a characterized by
predominant disturbance of
emotions and conduct
• Adjustment disorders are one of
the common psychiatric
disorders seen in adolescent and
women.
8. Stress and the immune
response
stressful stimuli can influence the
development of immune associated with
related disorder, including infections disease,
cancer, and autoimmune disorders.
9. Stress as a biological response
• In 1956, Hans Selye published
the results of his research
concerning the physiological
response of a biological system
to a change imposed on it.
• he has revised his definition of
stress, calling it ‘the state
manifested by a specific
syndrome which consist of all
the non-specifically- induced
changes within a biologic
system’
10. This syndrome of symptoms has come to be
known as flight or fight syndrome. He described
the reaction in three distinct stages:
• Alarm reaction stage
• Stage of resistance:
• Stage of Exhaustion
11. Stress as an environmental event
• A second concept defines stress
as the thing or event that triggers
the adaptive physiological and
psychological responses in an
individual.
• The event creates changes in the
life pattern of the individual,
requires significant adjustment in
lifestyle, and taxes available
personal resources.
12. • Miller and Rahe have updated the original social readjustment Rating
Scale devised by Holmes and Rahe in 1967
• A high score on the recent life changes questionnaire places the
individual at greater susceptibility to physical or psychological illness.
13. Stress as a transaction between the individual and
the environment:
• concept of stress emphasizes the relationship between the individual
and the environment
• personal characteristics and the nature of the environmental event are
considered.
14. Precipitating factor
• stimulus arising from the internal
or external environment and is
perceived by the individual’s in a
specific manner.
• The event precipitates a response
is influenced by the individual’s
perception of the event.
15. individual’s perception of the event
Primary appraisal
lazarus and Folkman (1984)
identified three types of primary
appraisal
• Irrelevant
• benign positive, and
• stressful
16. Secondary appraisal
• This secondary appraisal is an assessment of skill resources, and
knowledge that the person possesses to deal with the situation.
• Which coping strategies are available to me?
• Will the option I choose be effective in this situation?
• Do I have the ability to use that strategy in an effective manner?
17. Predisposing factor:
• A variety of elements influence how an individual perceive and
responds to a stressful event.
• Type
• Genetic influence,
• Past experience and
• existing condition.
