5.1 COMMANDING GOOD AND
FORBIDDING EVIL.
ā€¢In Arabic, commanding good and forbidding evil,
known as "amr bil ma'ruf wa nahi anil munkar," is a
fundamental concept in Islam. It is considered a
religious duty for Muslims to promote righteousness
and actively discourage wrongdoing within their
communities. This concept is derived from the
teachings of the Quran and the Sunnah (traditions) of
the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
ā€¢Commanding good and forbidding evil is
an essential aspect of Islamic teachings.
Muslims are encouraged to fulfill this
commandment through personal conduct,
education, advising, public advocacy,
supporting good causes, engaging in
dialogue, enjoining the good, discouraging
evil, utilizing social media, and leading by
example.
THE SIGNIFICANCE OF COMMANDING GOOD
AND FORBIDDING EVIL TO PROMOTE
RIGHTEOUSNESS
Commanding good and forbidding evil
is significant as it promotes
righteousness, contributes to social
reform, maintains social order, serves
as an educational tool, and aligns with
religious teachings.
WAYS THROUGH WHICH TODAY'S MUSLIMS
CAN COMMAND GOOD AND FORBID EVIL
Muslims can command good and forbid evil in
various ways, depending on their context and
capabilities. Some practical examples include:
Muslims can command good by practicing the Five
Pillars of Islam, seeking knowledge, promoting
justice and compassion, engaging in interfaith
dialogue, and exemplifying good character. These
actions enable Muslims to contribute positively to
their communities and uphold the teachings of
Islam.
Today's Muslims have various ways
through which they can command evil.
These include strengthening faith, self-
reflection, self-control, promoting good
deeds, seeking knowledge, upholding
moral values, active engagement in the
community, speaking out against injustice,
and seeking guidance from scholars.
ASSESSMENT
1.Describe ways of commanding good and
forbidding evil to fulfill Allah's (S.W.T.)
commandment.
2.Discuss the significance of commanding good
and forbidding evil to promote righteousness.
3.Explain how today's Muslims command good.
4.Discuss how today's Muslims command and
forbid evil.
SPECIFIC LEARNING OUTCOMES
By the end of the sub-strand, the learner should be able to:
ā€¢ Explain the teachings on fulfilment of promise and anger
management according to the sunnah of the Prophet (S.A.W.)
ā€¢ Describe ways in which Muslims can manage anger for
harmonious co-existence in the society
ā€¢ Examine the significance of fulfilling a promise and managing
anger in shaping the character of a Muslim
ā€¢ Practise fulfilment of a promise and anger management as
commanded in Islam
ā€¢ Appreciate fulfilment of a promise and anger management as
virtues in Islam.
5.2 VIRTUES IN ISLAM
The teachings on fulfilment of promise and anger
management according to the Sunnah of the Prophet
(S.A.W.)
ā€¢ According to the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad
(pbuh), the teachings on fulfillment of promises and
anger management emphasize the importance of integrity,
trustworthiness, and self-control. Fulfilling promises is
considered an essential aspect of faith, reflecting
character and commitment. On the other hand, anger is a
natural emotion that should be managed by seeking
refuge in Allah, practicing patience forgiveness, and
responding with kindness.
WAYS IN WHICH MUSLIMS CAN MANAGE
ANGER FOR HARMONIOUS CO-EXISTENCE IN
SOCIETY
ā€¢Engaging in positive coping mechanisms
ā€¢Seeking guidance from scholars
ā€¢Seeking forgiveness
ā€¢Practicing patience
ā€¢Controlling physical reactions
ā€¢Seeking refuge in Allah
THE SIGNIFICANCE OF FULFILLING A
PROMISE AND MANAGING ANGER IN
SHAPING THE CHARACTER OF A MUSLIM
Fulfilling promises demonstrates integrity, honesty, and
reliability. It builds trust among individuals and strengthens
relationships within the Muslim community.
Managing anger also ties into self-discipline, which is
highly valued in Islam. By restraining anger, a Muslim
develops self-control and cultivates a calm and composed
demeanor. This contributes to the overall development of a
virtuous character.
In conclusion, fulfilling promises and
managing anger play significant roles in
shaping the character of a Muslim. Fulfilling
promises demonstrates integrity, reliability,
and commitment to one's word while
managing anger promotes self-control,
patience, and forgiveness. These qualities are
highly valued in Islam and contribute to
developing a strong and righteous character.
REASONS WHY MUSLIMS SHOULD
FULFIL PROMISES
Muslims believe that fulfilling promises is a
means of pleasing Allah (God) and seeking
His blessings.
When individuals consistently fulfill their
promises, it builds trust and strengthens
relationships within the community.
The Quran, which is considered the holy
book of Islam, emphasizes the
significance of fulfilling promises. In
several verses, Muslims are reminded of
the importance of upholding their
commitments.
Trustworthiness is highly valued in
Islamic ethics and encompasses
fulfilling one's commitments and
obligations. Muslims are encouraged to
be trustworthy individuals who honor
their promises, whether they are
personal or professional in nature.
ASSESSMENT
1.Discuss the teachings on fulfilment of promise and
anger management according to the Sunnah of the
Prophet (S.A.W.)
2.Outline ways in which Muslims can manage anger
for harmonious co-existence in society.
3.Describe the significance of fulfilling a promise and
managing anger in shaping the character of a Muslim.
4.Why should Muslims fulfil promises?
SPECIFIC LEARNING OUTCOMES
By the end of the sub-strand, the learner should be
able to:
1. Explain the causes of deviant sexual behaviour
to safeguard oneself
2. Describe the effects of deviant sexual behaviour
in the society
3. Justify the rationale for the prohibition of
deviant sexual behaviour in Islam
4. Appreciate the rationale for the prohibition of
deviant sexual behaviour.
5.3 PROHIBITIONS IN ISLAM
Identify deviant sexual behaviour.
Deviant sexual behavior is any sexual
activity or interest that deviates from
societal norms or cultural
expectations. They include voyeurism,
fetishism, sadomasochism,incest, bestiality,
prostitution, and homosexuality.
THE CAUSES OF DEVIANT SEXUAL
BEHAVIOUR
ļƒ¼Certain brain abnormalities or dysfunctions in
areas responsible for impulse control and
decision-making may contribute to deviant
sexual behavior.
ļƒ¼Substance abuse can impair judgment and
increase the likelihood of engaging in risky or
deviant sexual behaviors.
ļƒ¼Certain mental disorders, such as paraphilic
disorders, personality disorders, or impulse
control disorders, can contribute to deviant
sexual behavior.
ļƒ¼Hormonal imbalances, such as high
testosterone levels, may play a role in deviant
sexual behavior.
ļƒ¼Exposure to deviant sexual behaviors through
media, peers, or family members can influence
an individual's attitudes and behaviors.
EFFECTS OF DEVIANT SEXUAL
BEHAVIOUR IN THE SOCIETY
ļƒ¼Deviant sexual behavior can be associated with mental
health problems such as depression, anxiety disorders,
substance abuse, and personality disorders.
ļƒ¼Individuals engaging in deviant sexual behavior may
struggle with low self-esteem and a diminished sense of
self-worth due to societal judgment and rejection.
ļƒ¼In some cases, deviant sexual behavior
involves non-consensual acts or harm
inflicted on others, leading to trauma for
both the victims and the perpetrators.
ļƒ¼ The presence of deviant sexual behavior
may hinder open and honest
communication between partners or
family members.
ļƒ¼In some cases, the revelation of deviant
sexual behavior can lead to relationship
breakdown or divorce due to irreconcilable
differences or a breach of trust.
ļƒ¼Individuals engaging in deviant sexual
behavior may face social stigma, prejudice,
and discrimination, leading to
marginalization and exclusion from various
aspects of society.
THE RATIONALE FOR THE PROHIBITION OF
DEVIANT SEXUAL BEHAVIOUR IN ISLAM
The rationale for the prohibition of deviant
sexual behavior in Islam is rooted in the
religious teachings and principles of the faith.
Islam strongly emphasizes maintaining
modesty and purity and preserving the
sanctity of marriage and family life.
ā€¢Islam strictly prohibits extramarital sexual
relations. The Quran explicitly condemns
adultery and fornication and prescribes
severe punishments for those found guilty.
ā€¢Engaging in sexual relations with animals is
also prohibited in Islam. Such acts are
considered unnatural and go against the
natural order established by God.
ā€¢Islam prohibits sexual relations between
close relatives, such as siblings, parents,
and children. These relationships are
considered sacred and should not be
violated.
ā€¢Islamic teachings consider homosexual
acts as sinful. The Quran mentions the
story of the people of Lot (known as
Sodom and Gomorrah), who engaged in
homosexual behavior and were punished
by God.66
ASSESSMENT
1. Identify deviant sexual behaviour.
2. Discuss the causes of deviant sexual behaviour to
safeguard oneself
3. Describe the effects of deviant sexual behaviour in
society.
4. Explain the rationale for the prohibition of deviant sexual
behaviour in Islam.
