Student Teaching Requirements
Program 1
Before you can student teach, you must meet these
requirements:
GPA of 3.0 or higher
24 credits of content and education courses completed
100 hours of fieldwork completed
Passed the following five (5) courses
 CEDF 712: Child and Adolescent Development
 EDESL 771: K-12 ESL Curriculum and Materials Through the Content Areas
 EDESL 772: First and Second Language, and Technological Literacy
 EDESL 796.1: Methodology of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages
 LING 702: Analysis and Structure of English
No Incompletes on your transcript
All previous admission conditions completed
Student Teaching Requirements
Program 2
If you are in Program 2, must satisfy the following prior to
Student Teaching:
GPA of 3.0 or higher
22 credits of content and education courses completed
50 hours of fieldwork completed
Passed the following five (5) courses:
 EDESL 771: K-12 ESL Curriculum and Materials Through the Content Areas
 EDESL 772: First and Second Language, and Technological Literacy
 EDESL 796.1: Methodology of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages
 LING 702: Analysis and Structure of English
 BILED 701: Foundations of Bilingual Education
No Incompletes on your transcript
All previous admission conditions completed
What is Practicum?
In academia, “Practicum” is a course where you
study your current practice
At Hunter we call Practicum an opportunity to be
a full time in- service teacher while you are
completing your degree.
Practicum Requirements
All Student Teaching requirements.
A Job
A job offer letter from a school principal on school letterhead
 This must state that:
 They are hiring you to teach ESL full-time (the equivalent of at least 5
periods/day, 5 days per week)
 Exactly which classes/grades/levels of ESL you will be teaching
 Must state that the job offer is for the period of this academic year
(Feb-June, 2014).
 TESOL Certification or Internship Certificate
 Even if you are certified in another area, you STILL need an
internship certificate!
Advanced Certificate Requirements
GPA of 3.2 or higher
20 credits of content and education courses
70 hours of fieldwork completed
Passed the following five (5) courses:
 CEDF 712: Child & Adolescent Development
 EDESL 771: K-12 ESL Curriculum and Materials Through the Content Areas
 EDESL 772: First, Second, & Technological Literacy
 EDESL 796.1: Methodology of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages
 LING 702: Analysis and Structure of English
No Incompletes on your transcript
Completed all previous admission conditions
What is an Internship Certificate?
A certificate issued by the New York State
Education Department that allows you to work as
a teacher in an ESL classroom before you are fully
certified in TESOL
Internship Certificate Requirements
You are a graduate student in an MA program leading to initial certification
You hold a teaching position requiring you to have NYS Certification in order
to retain that position OR you have a commitment for a teaching position on
the condition that you obtain NYS Certification
You have passed the your certification exams by the deadline
 Old Exams: LAST, ATSW and CST in TESOL
 New Exams: ALST, EAS and CST in TESOL
You have at least a 3.2 GPA in the TESOL Program
You will be able to complete your entire certification program within one year
(or within your remaining semesters of Practicum)
You must be registered for the Practicum (and be supervised) for the entire
time you are teaching on an Internship Certificate (until you are fully certified)
You must be recommended by the School of Education and will be supervised
by a Hunter Field Supervisor during the internship period
The deadline to submit an Internship Certificate application is
April 11, 2014

TESOL ST
Two Semesters (K-6 & 7-12)
One Credit Each Semester
TESOL Student Teachers who enroll in Practicum in the
second semester may teach in either grade level cluster
TESOL Practicum
Two Semesters at the grade level(s) hired to teach
One Credit Each Semester
Weekly Seminar
Your Mentor/Coach
 Observed by a Field Supervisor
 3 Observations per Semester (One Videotaped Lesson)
 Use of an Observation Scoring Guide
 Observations are 60% of your Seminar Grade
 If you have a request for a supervisor, let us know!
Field Supervision
Student Teaching & Practicum:
 Submit online ST/Practicum application before November 4
 Register for Student Teaching (after receiving registration permission
from Teresa Bruno)
Practicum:
 Submit Internships Certificate application online or to
tslforms@hunter.cuny.edu ( our application inbox)
 Begin looking for a teaching position – Keep an eye on the list serve!
 If you obtain an offer letter, change registration from ST to Practicum
(after receiving registration permission from Teresa Bruno)

  • 4. When is student teaching? Tentative Fall 2014 Dates Pending posting of NYC DOE 2014/2015 Calendar Starts August 28th Ends December 5 Follows the DOE school calendar, NOT the Hunter Academic Calendar
  • 5. Program 1 NY State Exam & Workshop Requirements Before you begin student teaching or practicum you must complete the following or show immediate plans to complete the following: New York State Certification Exams New York State Mandated Workshops Educating All Students (EAS) Child Abuse Recognition and Prevention Academic Literacy Skills Test (ALST) Violence Prevention Content Specialty Test – ESOL – (CST ESOL) Dignity for All Students (DASA)

Student Teaching Requirements Program 1 Before you can student teach, you must meet these requirements: GPA of 3.0 or higher 24 credits of content and education courses completed 100 hours of fieldwork completed Passed the following five (5) courses  CEDF 712: Child and Adolescent Development  EDESL 771: K-12 ESL Curriculum and Materials Through the Content Areas  EDESL 772: First and Second Language, and Technological Literacy  EDESL 796.1: Methodology of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages  LING 702: Analysis and Structure of English No Incompletes on your transcript All previous admission conditions completed

Student Teaching Requirements Program 2 If you are in Program 2, must satisfy the following prior to Student Teaching: GPA of 3.0 or higher 22 credits of content and education courses completed 50 hours of fieldwork completed Passed the following five (5) courses:  EDESL 771: K-12 ESL Curriculum and Materials Through the Content Areas  EDESL 772: First and Second Language, and Technological Literacy  EDESL 796.1: Methodology of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages  LING 702: Analysis and Structure of English  BILED 701: Foundations of Bilingual Education No Incompletes on your transcript All previous admission conditions completed
  • 9. What is Practicum? In academia, “Practicum” is a course where you study your current practice At Hunter we call Practicum an opportunity to be a full time in- service teacher while you are completing your degree.
  • 10. Practicum Requirements All Student Teaching requirements. A Job A job offer letter from a school principal on school letterhead  This must state that:  They are hiring you to teach ESL full-time (the equivalent of at least 5 periods/day, 5 days per week)  Exactly which classes/grades/levels of ESL you will be teaching  Must state that the job offer is for the period of this academic year (Feb-June, 2014).  TESOL Certification or Internship Certificate  Even if you are certified in another area, you STILL need an internship certificate!

Advanced Certificate Requirements GPA of 3.2 or higher 20 credits of content and education courses 70 hours of fieldwork completed Passed the following five (5) courses:  CEDF 712: Child & Adolescent Development  EDESL 771: K-12 ESL Curriculum and Materials Through the Content Areas  EDESL 772: First, Second, & Technological Literacy  EDESL 796.1: Methodology of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages  LING 702: Analysis and Structure of English No Incompletes on your transcript Completed all previous admission conditions
  • 12. What is an Internship Certificate? A certificate issued by the New York State Education Department that allows you to work as a teacher in an ESL classroom before you are fully certified in TESOL
  • 13. Internship Certificate Requirements You are a graduate student in an MA program leading to initial certification You hold a teaching position requiring you to have NYS Certification in order to retain that position OR you have a commitment for a teaching position on the condition that you obtain NYS Certification You have passed the your certification exams by the deadline  Old Exams: LAST, ATSW and CST in TESOL  New Exams: ALST, EAS and CST in TESOL You have at least a 3.2 GPA in the TESOL Program You will be able to complete your entire certification program within one year (or within your remaining semesters of Practicum) You must be registered for the Practicum (and be supervised) for the entire time you are teaching on an Internship Certificate (until you are fully certified) You must be recommended by the School of Education and will be supervised by a Hunter Field Supervisor during the internship period The deadline to submit an Internship Certificate application is April 11, 2014
  • 14. Student Teaching Placements STs DO NOT arrange their own placements Teresa Bruno works with Laura Baecher to consider your preferences and find you the best placement possible! The more we know, the more we can help you. Be specific.

  • 17. TESOL ST Two Semesters (K-6 & 7-12) One Credit Each Semester TESOL Student Teachers who enroll in Practicum in the second semester may teach in either grade level cluster TESOL Practicum Two Semesters at the grade level(s) hired to teach One Credit Each Semester Weekly Seminar
  • 18. Your Mentor/Coach  Observed by a Field Supervisor  3 Observations per Semester (One Videotaped Lesson)  Use of an Observation Scoring Guide  Observations are 60% of your Seminar Grade  If you have a request for a supervisor, let us know! Field Supervision
  • 19. Student Teaching & Practicum:  Submit online ST/Practicum application before November 4  Register for Student Teaching (after receiving registration permission from Teresa Bruno) Practicum:  Submit Internships Certificate application online or to tslforms@hunter.cuny.edu ( our application inbox)  Begin looking for a teaching position – Keep an eye on the list serve!  If you obtain an offer letter, change registration from ST to Practicum (after receiving registration permission from Teresa Bruno) Deadline for ALL applications: April 11, 2014 Applying for ST/Practicum
