Welcome
Welcome to the Community Language Program (CLP). The CLP,
which includes the Community English Program (CEP), is a unique
and integral part of the TESOL and Applied Linguistics Programs
at Teachers College, Columbia University. It provides quality and
low-cost English and foreign language instruction to adult learners of
diverse nationalities and backgrounds in the Columbia University and
surrounding New York communities.
In addition, the CLP serves as an on-site language education lab in
which TESOL and Applied Linguistics faculty and students enrolled
in the masters and doctoral program teach the courses and use the
CLP as a setting for empirical inquiry. With observation and class-
room research we gain insight into how efficient teaching might take
place. Thus, the CLP helps bring theory and practice closer together.

We administer a placement test to all new students. The purpose of the place-
ment test is solely to place students in their appropriate levels. The placement test
will take place over one day:
First Day of Class
Before classes begin, you will be emailed your class schedules (detailing your level,
class(es), class materials, classrooms, dates, times, and instructors), asked to pur-
chase your textbooks, and asked to go to your classrooms the first day of classes.
If you cannot find your classroom, please call or come to the CLP main office.
ALL STUDENTS MUST SHOW proof of registration on the first day
of class by presenting a CLP ID card stamped and signed by CLP staff.
Transfers
All student transfers to different levels and classes must be approved by their teach-
ers and CLP administrators during the add/drop period. All students must contact
their teachers requesting to be transferred. The teacher will then meet with CLP
administrators to determine if the transfer can be approved.
Deadline for Transfers:
September 25, 2015
Refunds
Students must come to the CLP office to request a refund. In order to receive a
refund, students must obtain a refund slip from the CLP staff (46E Horace Mann),

operation. Receipts must be presented in order to receive a refund. Please allow up
to 7 business days for funds to appear on your credit card.

Acknowledgement and Agreement Statement
The CLP is a lab school where teachers-in-training teach classes and where student
performance is observed, photographed and audio and/or video recordings are
made for purposes of teacher training and research. By registering for CLP classes,
you authorize the CLP to observe, photograph and record your class work. These
recordings, your written class work, exams, and your placement tests will be used
not only to help you learn another language but also for teacher training and re-
search which may be shared with other Teachers College faculty and students either
in the classroom or electronically. You further authorize the CLP and Teachers
College to use the recordings, photographs and written work in all media for any
other non-profit educational purpose.
Payment Instructions
CLP students must pay tuition either through our website or in person. In-person
payments must be made with cash or credit card. In order to be registered for
classes you must have paid tuition.
You will NOT be secured a place in our program unless you have paid
for tuition.
Requirements and Restrictions
All students must be 18 years of age or older and present a valid photo ID
at registration.
Enrollment in the CLP cannot be a basis for obtaining an F1 student visa, and
since we are a non-degree program, credits are not offered.
NOTE: Class size is limited. Students are only accepted during the designated reg-
istration periods. Students are tested during registration and placed in levels before
the first class.
Attendance and Tracking Students
Students that miss 5 or more classes or that are late for 10 or more classes cannot
pass the course. They will, however, be eligible for a letter of attendance.
English as a Second Language (ESL)
60 hours - $400
ESL Classes are designed around general topics and themes and focus on building
up communitcative competency in all four skills (i.e., listening, speaking, reading
and writing). We offer proficiency levels from Beginner through Intermediate to
Advanced.
Levels Description the ESL program at the CLP offers 17 different profi-
ciency levels: four beginner levels (B1-B4), six intermediate levels (I1-I6), and seven
advanced levels (A1-A6 and Advanced Studies). Each level covers specific grammar
components as well as, speaking, listening, reading, and writing tasks relevant for
communicating about increasingly complex topics. Below are some of the areas
covered throughout the Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced levels.
• Beginner levels enable students to communicate about basic and familiar
topics using simple vocabulary and grammar structures. Focused listening and
reading techniques such as scanning are introduced as well as paragraph writ-
ing and peer-editing techniques. Speaking in basic social and work situations is
also emphasized
• Intermediate levels (I1-I6) enable students to communicate about gener-
al social and work-related topics using a range of vocabulary and grammatical
structures. Focused listening and reading techniques such as skimming and
scanning are introduced as well as essay and letter writing. Speaking in a range
of social and professional situations is also emphasized.
• Advanced levels (A1-A6) enable students to communicate in a wide range
of social, professional, and academic situations using advanced vocabulary
and complex grammatical structures. Focused listening and reading techniques
such as reading for inference and recognizing tone and level of formality are
introduced as well as writing in different formal and informal genres. Speaking
accurately, fluently, and appropriately is also emphasized.
• Advanced studies is the highest proficiency level that the CLP offers.
The teacher tailors the curriculum to address the students’ personal needs
and interests.

Advanced P&S reviews the individual sounds of the English language and focus-

patterns through a variety of activities such as self-recordings, discussions, and pre-
sentations. To be eligible for this class, students must score into level A3 or higher.

attitudes; note-taking, planning, organizing, and delivering a spoken and written re-
sponse. Although emphasis in on the independent tasks, integrated sections will also
be introduced. To be eligible for this class, students must score into level I4 or higher.
TOEFL Preparation II. This class is designed for students who have some
familiarity with TOEFL and wish to further develop and maximize their performance
