- #2 Welcome to Part Two of the Advising Tutorial where I will discuss using Degree Guide to review the requirements needed to complete the General Education portion of your degree. You will commonly hear this group referred to as “Gen Ed” and also as “G.E.”.
- #3 In Part Two, I will identify the 2 groups of requirements that make up General Education which are the Competency requirements and the Core Curriculum. We will discuss each of these in the 2nd and 3rd section of our outline. Lastly, there are 3 additional requirements within General Education which need to be completed. I will briefly explain each of these components. At the end of this presentation, you will be provided with a list of recommended courses offered in the OPS program which will meet G.E. requirements.
- #4 The first set of requirements for General Education is called the Competency requirements and the second set is the Core Curriculum. Degree Guide lists the requirements within each of these groups and the two groups combined compose G.E. Next, I will provide a explanation of the Competency requirements.
- #5 The G.E. competency requirements ensure that students have skills in the areas of English, math, technology, and foreign language. The English competency requires ENG113 Composition or its equivalent. For the math competency, the CBU course to satisfy this requirement is MAT115 Intermediate Algebra or higher. MAT115 has a prerequisite of MAT095 Elementary Algebra or a passing score on the challenge exam. Students also need to meet thetechnology competency and 2 semesters of the same foreign language. ^There are some common exemptions within the competencies: An exemption means a requirement is met, but no units are earned. It is possible to meet 3 of these competency course requirements with exemptions through high school coursework. ^A student who completes an approved Computer course with a ‘B’ or higher will be exempted from the Technology Competency requirement. ^A student who completes 1 year, or two semesters, of a Foreign Language with a ‘B’ or better will be exempted from one semester of that Foreign Language. ^A student who completes 2 years, or four semesters, of the same Foreign Language with a ‘B’ or better will be exempted from both required semesters of a Foreign Language.OPS students are not required to send high school transcripts. If you think you have met any these exemptions, request your official high school transcript be sent to CBU. On the next slide, I will discuss the second group of requirements which is the Gen. Ed. Core Curriculum.
- #6 The core curriculum ensures that students are exposed to ideas and content related to the liberal arts tradition. In addition, a decidedly Christian perspective is integrated into these requirements. Within the core curriculum of General Education, each category title is listed in the gold bar on your Degree Guide. ^Below the title is a brief description of how to meet it. Shown here is a partial list of the core curriculum, please review your Degree Guide for the complete list of requirements. ^Please note: If you are required to take a course within your major and/or your concentration that would also meet one of the categories within the competencies or the core curriculum of General Education, that course may be applied to both the major requirement and the G.E.requirement.
- #7 Now that you are familiar with the competency and the core curriculum requirements of general education, it is time to explain three additional criteria in order for general education to be entirely complete. These three categories are found on degree guide at the end of the general education area and are titled as UPPER DIVISION, MULTICULTURAL, and INTERDISCIPLINARY.^The UPPER DIVISION category requires 12.0 units from the core curriculumto be completed at upper division level. ^At CBU, upper division courses are notated as 3** or 4** level in the course number and it refers to junior or senior level coursework. In order to complete 12.0 units of upper division level classes from the core curriculum, degree guide applies any 300-400 level courses taken from the core curriculum categories. It is wise to plan ahead to ensure that at least 4 of your G.E. classes from the core curriculum are 300-400 level classes. Any course numbers you take at the 100-200 level and all transfer coursework from community college is only lower division coursework.^The MULTICULTURAL requirement needs 9.0 units from the competency or the core curriculum to have a multicultural designation. The good news is that most students automatically complete this requirement by the end of their first semester of classes. Courses with a multicultural designation are notated with a “M”, ^ as in this snapshot from degree guide.^The INTERDISCIPLINARY designation requires 9.0 units from the competency or the core curriculum to have an interdisciplinary designation. Interdisciplinary courses combine two or more academic fields of study. Courses designated as interdisciplinary are notated with an “I”, ^ as in this snapshot from degree guide.
- #8 Some classes are able to complete more than one category listed here. ^Here is an example: ^This student took HIS311 for U.S. History; because it is a 3** level course, ^ it meets 3.0 units upper division. ^The M indicates that it has a multicultural designation. ^And the I indicates that it has the interdisciplinary designation. So this course will be counted in all of these requirements within Gen. Ed.Next, I will direct you to find a list of recommended courses offered in the OPS program that will meet each general education requirement and identify which courses are upper division and/or have an interdisciplinary designation.
- #9 A list of recommended OPS classes to meet general education is posted on InsideCBU. Please follow these steps:^First, go to InsideCBU, then click on the Academics tab. ^In the left menu, click on the OPS Advising Main Page. ^On this web page, in the OPS Advising Resources is a link for Recommended Classes to Meet G.E. On the list, you will see that the lower division and upper division choices are in separate columns. Additionally, interdisciplinary classes have an star next to the course number.
