This document summarizes progress in developing tools to combat Ug99 stem rust resistance. It describes efforts by various research institutions to identify new sources of resistance in wheat relatives and improve existing resistance genes. New tools include markers for gene pyramiding, high-density genotyping platforms, and map-based cloning of resistance genes. Overall, more resistance sources and improved tools are being developed than ever before, providing an opportunity for durable global control of stem rust if varieties with complex resistance can be deployed responsibly.
