Editor's Notes

  • #11 Statewide historic preservation planning is one of the responsibilities required of the Commonwealth under the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) and the Pennsylvania History Code. This effort is overseen by the National Park Service (NPS), which reviews and approves all state preservation plans. Pennsylvania’s Statewide Historic Preservation Plan (2012‐2017) lays out a five-year framework for action and collaboration. The overarching goal is to build stronger communities by using cultural and historic resources in ways that add value to citizens’ lives today and in the future. The link between historic and natural resources is recognized and supported by this Plan. The ACTION AGENDA presented in the Plan was developed with the direct intent of being highly responsive to public needs and desires. Although this Plan was prepared mainly by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission’s Bureau for Historic Preservation, which serves as the State Historic Preservation Office, it was developed with extensive public input and diverse expertise. The 2012-2017 PA Historic Preservation Plan was created by and for all Pennsylvanians and requires assistance and participation from all Pennsylvanians for this Plan to be a success. The widespread public and State agency participation that went into developing this Plan’s ACTION AGENDA issues a new challenge to BHP and our partners. That challenge is to promote a Statewide policy framework that encourages more robust preservation planning at the state and local level and reinforces the connection between historic, natural, and recreational resources throughout the Commonwealth.
