William PennOne of the most memorable people in United States re.docxalanfhall8953
William Penn
One of the most memorable people in United States religious history whose efforts are still evident in this twenty first century is William Penn. In today’s America, Penn is recognized through the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) as their chief. Penn is also well remembered through the city of Philadelphia, which was in fact, the first city for Penn to plan and build in his colony. His writing capabilities can also not go unmentioned. In fact, one of his most important works is No Cross, No Crown; A Discourse Showing the Nature and Discipline of the Holy Cross of Christ—a well-known Christian classic. This essay explores different facets of William Penn including his position as icon in the Capitol, his relations with Native Americans, his planning of Philadelphia, and particularly, his affiliation with the Quakers. It is because of Penn’s political intelligence coupled with his strong beliefs in religious tolerance that he is considered one of America’s early heroes.
William Penn was from an Anglican family that was very distinguished because they adherents of English Church. His father was Sir William Penn, a landowner. At twenty two, Penn decided to join the Quakers, which were also referred to as the Religious Society of Friends. The Quakers obeyed the “inner light”, which they believed to have come directly from God. They refused to take their hats off or even bow for any man. They also refused to take up arms. Their beliefs were completely different compared to beliefs that other Christians had (Barbour and Frost 167). The Oxford University in England expelled Penn in the year 1662 when he refused to conform to the teachings of the Anglican Church. He used to publicly state his beliefs and he printed some of the things that he believed in. At that time, there was no freedom of speech in England.
The Quakers’ founder, George Foxx was a close friend to Penn. Oliver Cromwell’s death was a time of turmoil to the Quakers since they were suspected for the death because they had beliefs that differed from the religion that had been imposed for the state. ****** They had also refused to swear a loyalty oath to Cromwell, who was the king. Quakers did not swear since Christ had commanded people not to swear (Penn 21). The religious views that Penn had were a distress to his father. Naval service had helped him earn an Ireland estate and he had always hoped that the intelligence and charisma that his son had could help him in winning favor at Charles II court. However, that could not happen since his son was always arrested. Penn and George Foxx were frequent companions since they could always travel together in order to spread their ministry (Penn 20). He also wrote a comprehension that was detailed and comprehensive regarding Quakerism. After the death of his father in 1670, Penn inherited the estates of the family and he could frequently visit the court of King Charles II where he was always campaigning for freedom in relig.
Pennsylvania National Action Network Calls on Sen. Elizabeth Warren to Suppor...All That Philly Jazz
On the day Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney announced his endorsement of Sen. Elizabeth Warren for the Democratic presidential nomination it was reported Kenney has no plan to remove the controversial Frank Rizzo monument from Thomas Paine Plaza. Rizzo is a former mayor and police commissioner who was sued by the U.S. Department of Justice for a pattern of police brutality that “shocks the conscience.”
Sen. Warren supports removal of Confederate monuments. The family-financed Rizzo monument memorializes a racist who trampled on civil rights, urged supporters to “vote white” and traumatized the African American community.

As national civil and human rights organizations and leaders committed to the protection of the rights of African Americans and all Americans, we come together as a unified collective to urgently impress upon elected officials, law enforcement, the legal profession, businesses and all those in this nation interested in social justice, that we must not allow the killing of Michael Brown and other unarmed individuals across this nation to be in vain. As organizational leaders we represent millions across this country who are, as the old saying goes – “sick and tired of being sick and tired.”

Statement of Faye Anderson on Nomination of First African Baptist Church
1. Good morning. My name is Faye Anderson. I am the founder and director of All That
Philly Jazz, a public history project that is telling the story of Philadelphia's rich jazz
heritage. We are mapping jazz-related historic resources, including the Academy of
Music, Royal Theater, Mercantile Hall (better known as the Blue Horizon), Pyramid
Club, Church of the Advocate and Tindley Temple Methodist Church. I am also the
recipient of a diversity scholarship to attend the National Trust for Historic
Preservation's upcoming annual conference.
I support the listing of First African Baptist Church on the Philadelphia Register of
Historic Places. The nomination is thorough so I won't repeat what's before you. By
any measure, the First African Baptist Church is of significance to the development,
heritage and cultural characteristics of Philadelphia, the Commonwealth of
Pennsylvania and indeed the nation.
On June 4, 2009, City Council passed Resolution No. 09049. The resolution reads in
part:
WHEREAS, The First African Baptist Church of Philadelphia is the
oldest African American-founded Baptist congregation in the City of
Philadelphia and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and one of the
oldest African American-founded Baptist congregations in the United
States of America; and
WHEREAS, Two freemen, John and Samuel Bivens, sold themselves into
slavery so that James Burrows of Northampton County, Virginia could
become the third pastor; and
WHEREAS, The First African Baptist Church of Philadelphia has been
instrumental in the birth of many notable organizations including the
Christian Street YMCA and the Downingtown Industrial School.
2. BE IT RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA,
That it recognizes, honors, celebrates and thanks the First African
Baptist Church of Philadelphia for its invaluable contributions to the
City of Philadelphia on the joyous occasion of its 200th Anniversary.
Similarly, at the August 20th hearing on the Department of License & Inspections'
complaint, Municipal Court Judge Craig Washington said, “It's a very important
building to America, not just to Philadelphia, not just to the Baptists.”
In a study conducted for the Preservation Alliance for Greater Philadelphia, “From
Refuge to Strength: The Rise of the African American Church in Philadelphia, 1787-
1949,” Matthew S. Hopper concluded:
The church buildings of modern African American congregations in
Philadelphia, both those that were built by black congregations and those
that were purchased, tell the stories of religious institutions that grew with
their communities, relocated over time, and remained at the heart of black
social, political, and religious life through times of prosperity and despair.
First African Baptist Church is no exception. It was a place of refuge, “a great rock in
a weary land.” From Emancipation to the Great Migration through the Civil Rights
era, First African Baptist Church tells an American story of faith, defiance and
triumph. It tells the story of how we got over.
Almost 86 years ago to the day on September 4, 1929, Thurgood Marshall wed
Vivien Burey at First African Baptist Church. As Chief Counsel for the NAACP,
Marshall won Brown v. Board of Education, the landmark United States Supreme
Court decision that desegregated public schools. Marshall later became the first
African American to serve on the Supreme Court.
So in the names of John and Samuel Bivens and Thurgood Marshall, I urge you to
grant historic designation to First African Baptist Church.
