Preserving Philadelphia's Built African American Heritage: A Conversation with Faye Anderson

In 1954, Elijah Muhammad sent Malcolm X to Philadelphia to expand Temple No. 12 of the Nation of Islam. During his stay in the City of Brotherly Love, he lived in the Sharswood neighborhood at 2503 W. Oxford Street. The house is historically significant because of its association with Malcolm X, aka El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz, a human rights activist and cultural icon whose charismatic leadership laid the foundation for the growth of Islam among African Americans in the City of Philadelphia, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the nation.

All That Philly Jazz is a digital mappiny project at the intersection of technology, art and civic engagement. We are mapping Philadelphia’s rich jazz heritage, including historic landmarks and events, legacy clubs and Walk of Fame plaques. The points of interest will be contextualized with oral histories and data from, among other sources, Echo Nest and Rdio. On the day Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney announced his endorsement of Sen. Elizabeth Warren for the Democratic presidential nomination it was reported Kenney has no plan to remove the controversial Frank Rizzo monument from Thomas Paine Plaza. Rizzo is a former mayor and police commissioner who was sued by the U.S. Department of Justice for a pattern of police brutality that “shocks the conscience.” Sen. Warren supports removal of Confederate monuments. The family-financed Rizzo monument memorializes a racist who trampled on civil rights, urged supporters to “vote white” and traumatized the African American community.
