Pennsylvania National Action Network Calls on Sen. Elizabeth Warren to Suppor...All That Philly Jazz
On the day Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney announced his endorsement of Sen. Elizabeth Warren for the Democratic presidential nomination it was reported Kenney has no plan to remove the controversial Frank Rizzo monument from Thomas Paine Plaza. Rizzo is a former mayor and police commissioner who was sued by the U.S. Department of Justice for a pattern of police brutality that “shocks the conscience.”
Sen. Warren supports removal of Confederate monuments. The family-financed Rizzo monument memorializes a racist who trampled on civil rights, urged supporters to “vote white” and traumatized the African American community.

The Painted Bride Art Center, the oldest alternative art space in Philadelphia, is seeking court approval to sell its land and property to a developer who plans to demolish the building and destroy Isaiah Zagar's iconic "Skin of the Bride" mosaic murals. In a letter to Judge Matthew Carrafiello. I urge him to reject the petition.
On September 14, 2018, I provided public comment in support of the Magic Gardens' nomination of the Painted Bride building for listing on the Philadelphia Register of Historic Places.

Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens nominated the Painted Bride for historic designation and listing on the Philadelphia Register of Historic Places. The nomination was on the agenda for the July 13, 2018 meeting of the Philadelphia Historical Commission but the Painted Bride Art Center has asked for a continuance. These are the comments I would have made at the meeting.

In 1954, Elijah Muhammad sent Malcolm X to Philadelphia to expand Temple No. 12 of the Nation of Islam. During his stay in the City of Brotherly Love, he lived in the Sharswood neighborhood at 2503 W. Oxford Street. The house is historically significant because of its association with Malcolm X, aka El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz, a human rights activist and cultural icon whose charismatic leadership laid the foundation for the growth of Islam among African Americans in the City of Philadelphia, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the nation.

Black Leaders’ Unified Statement of Action to Promote Reform and Stop Police ...All That Philly Jazz
As national civil and human rights organizations and leaders committed to the protection of the rights of African Americans and all Americans, we come together as a unified collective to urgently impress upon elected officials, law enforcement, the legal profession, businesses and all those in this nation interested in social justice, that we must not allow the killing of Michael Brown and other unarmed individuals across this nation to be in vain. As organizational leaders we represent millions across this country who are, as the old saying goes – “sick and tired of being sick and tired.”
