When citizens get involved : the power of online communities and crowdsourcingJorieke Vyncke
Thanks to our growing connectivity, it is now easier than ever for citizens to collectively contribute to a project or cause. From microtasking, over collective intelligence, to implicit crowdsourcing; the now widely available technologies and worldwide social networks have allowed for individuals to contribute their own knowledge and skills to a larger whole. But what is crowdsourcing exactly? What drives people to do it? And how is this collaboration exactly coordinated? During this talk all these points will be addressed, a lot of examples will be given, and of course we’ll discuss possible ways that crowdsourcing can be used in development and humanitarian aid.

How Social Networking is Changing How We Collaborate and Share InformationLynn Reyes
The "social" factor in the way things really work and how we might think about it from discovery, strategic planning and design, execution, measurement and management.
Presentation made at the Convurge Conference in June 2007.
Are Communities Empowering People or Reinforcing Dominations ?Louis-David Benyayer
As OuiShare Fest teaser puts it: "communities are transforming cities, organizations and civic action everywhere in the world". As this transformations prove to grow bigger every day, questions about their consequences arise. What are their meaning and direction? What relationships between individuals and corporations do communities allow for? Who governs them and how is value created allocated? More widely, we should now seriously question the new balances being established between empowerment and exploitation.

Social Technology
by Marti A. Hearst
We are in the midst of extraordinary
change in how people interact with one
another and with information. A
combination of advances in technology
and change in people's expectations is
altering the way products are sold,
scientific problems are solved, software
is written, elections are conducted, and
government is run.
People are social animals, and as Shirky
notes, we now have tools that are
flexible enough to match our in-built
social capabilities. Things can get
done that weren't possible before
because the right expertise, the missing
information, or a large enough group of
people can now be gathered together at
low cost.
These developments open a number of
interesting questions for NSF and CISE.
What are the key research problems? How
should these developments change how
research is conducted? How can the
intersection of social science and
technology research be aided or
improved? And how should this effect
how NSF researchers get involved with
relevant government efforts, including
transparent government, emergency
response, and citizen science?
In this talk I attempt to summarize
and put some structure around some of
these developments.

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

PHP Frameworks: I want to break free (IPC Berlin 2024)Ralf Eggert
In this presentation, we examine the challenges and limitations of relying too heavily on PHP frameworks in web development. We discuss the history of PHP and its frameworks to understand how this dependence has evolved. The focus will be on providing concrete tips and strategies to reduce reliance on these frameworks, based on real-world examples and practical considerations. The goal is to equip developers with the skills and knowledge to create more flexible and future-proof web applications. We'll explore the importance of maintaining autonomy in a rapidly changing tech landscape and how to make informed decisions in PHP development.
This talk is aimed at encouraging a more independent approach to using PHP frameworks, moving towards a more flexible and future-proof approach to PHP development.
Connector Corner: Automate dynamic content and events by pushing a buttonDianaGray10
Here is something new! In our next Connector Corner webinar, we will demonstrate how you can use a single workflow to:
Create a campaign using Mailchimp with merge tags/fields
Send an interactive Slack channel message (using buttons)
Have the message received by managers and peers along with a test email for review
But there’s more:
In a second workflow supporting the same use case, you’ll see:
Your campaign sent to target colleagues for approval
If the “Approve” button is clicked, a Jira/Zendesk ticket is created for the marketing design team
But—if the “Reject” button is pushed, colleagues will be alerted via Slack message
Join us to learn more about this new, human-in-the-loop capability, brought to you by Integration Service connectors.

Editor's Notes

The growing usage of social networks and the emergence of the real-time web are changing the way customers expect to interact with brands. Customers are looking for experiences that are online, social, available to them 24x7x365 and accessible online via their PC, phone, tablet, or other internet connected devices.
Brands want to answer that call and create a deeper engagement with citizens, but need to find creative ways to do this. Ways where they can provide a quality experience while staying within their budget and not overtaxing their IT staff. They must also do this in a way that makes the site accessible to customers with disabilities as well an experience that is safe for younger customers.
I’d like to spend the next 15 minutes talking with you about two technologies we’re working on at Microsoft – technologies that help you engage with citizens online, regardless whether that’s on a laptop, a tablet or a mobile phone.
I’ll start with an overview of Microsoft LookingGlass, which allows you to listen to, participate, and engage with citizens across today’s most popular social networks. I’ll follow that up with an overview of Microsoft TownHall, an online tool that fosters and houses conversations between governments and citizens across a number of devices including the web, windows mobile, iPhone, and Android phones.

People just inherently like to compete, even if the scores are not intrinsically valuable. Points are generally awarded in 10-point increments, and while this site has only been up a short time … other sites, like the Be A Martian site that Stan showed earlier, have been up for 6-9 months and have multiple users that have gained over 2.5 million points just by helping drive discussion and answer questions for their online community of choice.
And, you can use this system to tie online activities and real-world actions – invite the people with the highest point totals to a special event … or award points for desired actions like fundraising or getting signatures on a petition.
