SPSHawaii: Navigation: A Step Towards Success in SharePointStacy Deere
Navigation can single handily destroy any SharePoint implementation. How you ask? If your users cannot easily find what they are looking for in 3 clicks or less they have lost focus and sometimes the drive to reuse the site. However, that is not the only issue that can occur with a navigation, one of the most popular ones I have been seeing lately is navigation that takes the users to another page or site then to another and another and another. I guess the good thing is they eventually get there but the bad news is now they are going to bookmark or make it a favorite so that they never have to click so many times to get back there. Sounds like a great solution for the users right? Actually, it’s the worst thing that can possibly happen to your SharePoint implementation. The basis of implementing SharePoint within an organization is collaboration and if the users are bookmarking sites then they are missing all the information the company is trying to share with their organization. The home page becomes obsolete, editors of the sites stop updating it and then collaboration only (hopefully) exists within the content sites and the company fails in communication.

Presentation done for SharePoint Saturday Nashville on Document ID's, Document Archive, Records Centers and Document Sets and how to use each of these in the business.
This is a presentation by Dada Robert in a Your Skill Boost masterclass organised by the Excellence Foundation for South Sudan (EFSS) on Saturday, the 25th and Sunday, the 26th of May 2024.
He discussed the concept of quality improvement, emphasizing its applicability to various aspects of life, including personal, project, and program improvements. He defined quality as doing the right thing at the right time in the right way to achieve the best possible results and discussed the concept of the "gap" between what we know and what we do, and how this gap represents the areas we need to improve. He explained the scientific approach to quality improvement, which involves systematic performance analysis, testing and learning, and implementing change ideas. He also highlighted the importance of client focus and a team approach to quality improvement.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Editor's Notes
Throughout time we as humans have been navigating this earth using only the tools we have available. For instance, Vikings from the 11th century were navigating using the sun and a clear stone called a sunstone to show them which direction was north in the open seas.
Modern day humans have things like GPS devices, Google, Suri, Wayz and even in vehicle navigation, so we have maps with us constantly.
So, when it comes to SharePoint, navigation should be something simple, yet there are so many people that don’t understand how it’s set up or where to go. Bottom line to quote Yogi Berra: “If you don’t know where you are going, you’ll probably end up someplace else”
So what is navigation??
By definition navigation is the skill or process of plotting a route and directing someone, or something like a ship or aircraft, along that route.
This seems simple enough, yet, many times we are taken off track, lose our way and eventually wind up someplace else. The feeling of frustration overwhelming our senses.
Typical Navigation contains some type of global navigation or top link bar as well as a left hand side navigation.
Without publishing we have to set up each of the screens for the quick launch to be able to add the navigation links for each heading we want.
Once we get it all set up, then we have to go back to the top link bar and go thru the same set of screens to set up the top link bar (global navigation).
After all of this, I prefer to have publishing turned on just for the use of the navigation elements that make it so much easier. However, there are other reasons why publishing isn’t turned on so just be careful knowing those consequences. For instance, you can’t create a template of a site when you have publishing turned on.
So let’s break down some of the navigation elements. Let’s start with the top of the world shall we, or our global navigation.
When it comes to global navigation be a compass.
Compasses will always point you north and global navigation is at the “north” of the pages.
A Compass is always consistent. Your Global Navigation should also be consistent.
Your global navigation should also match what your site architecture is. Think of it as a map to all the content that is located throughout the sites. This map should be your site architecture. Base your site architecture on what you need for security purposes along with your business architecture. How does your business run…by function or department, by value stream, or perhaps by some other way. Mimicing this corporate culture into SharePoint site set up will help users to understand how the content is organized.
Notice in this example there are only four elements to the global navigation. Talk about easier than a compass….north, south, east and west. Everything that people need to know is contained within departments, forms, training and locations.
Notice as well how the global navigation stays the same when users go from the home page to the different department pages. This consistency allows people to navigate quickly back to where they started or to another area without having to go all the way back to their home.
We keep things in navigation consistent by setting up structural navigation, inheriting navigation from the parent and setting a global navigation that is used throughout the site collections.
Remember when using managed metadata for your global navigation that everyone will see all elements of the global navigation as there isn’t any security trimming on global managed metadata navigation. So if you have private areas, just consider the use of global managed metadata navigation or you will have to use additional custom code to make it work.
Anyone here ever gotten lost even with the navigation? For instance, the address you gave google maps or suri just didn’t take you to the exact location or it was in the middle of a dead end road??
What if where you want to go doesn’t have an address yet?? How do you find it then? How do you find your way around inside a building? You may need a different kind of map to provide you some guidance.
Good thing in SharePoint there’s things like current navigation.
Let’s take a look at the current navigation. Current navigation is where we currently are. You’re GPS may not be able to find specific points of interest so that’s where a map of the current premises is most useful.
The points of interest may be enhanced with signs that explain different things for the users as well as guide them to the next point and is often accompanied by a map with drawings (pictures) as well as a path that provides the guidance along the way.
The map of the site collection is really called by three different names based on what we saw earlier where publishing is either turned on or off.
This is the Left Hand Navigation, the quick launch or the current navigation.
This help the user understand what is important in this particular site. Which list and libraries, calendars and tasks are used the most but isn’t present on the home page of the team site.
This content should also remain somewhat consistent. Most important elements are typically set as webparts, then the left hand navigation used for other areas.
We keep things in navigation consistent by setting up structural navigation, inheriting navigation from the parent and setting a global navigation that is used throughout the site collections.
While links lists will work for navigation, it doesn’t work quite as well as the promoted links and it’s a little like stopping and asking for directions.
Net up let’s talk about a few Navigation Tips.
No one likes to stop and ask for directions, but we all have at least once in our lives. With SharePoint, sometimes we may need a little help in what works best for our users, so if you’re wondering if you include something or not in your navigation, you may want to consult with your users before.
So, here’s a few tips for navigation.
Watch the signs
Use pictures, use symbols. It shouldn’t be a scavenger hunt to get where you are going. It should have markers that show you the way.
Signs will lead you to where you want to be. Use pictures if possible. People have a tendency to remember pictures 200 X more than just words or text. So use pictures or symbols to communicate the message of your navigation.
When things don’t change, the better people will understand where they are in relation to things they already know.
When it comes to SharePoint….If content is King, consistency in getting to that content is Queen.
Use the same methods for getting from place to place each time. Content may change, but the navigation structure and organization should be embedded and mimic the corporate culture and business architecture.
Be organized.
This may take some planning. Make sure your Site Architecture matches your business architecture. For instance, if you are organized in your business by departments, does it really make sense to have your SharePoint not match departments??
I was once asked to organize SharePoint by product line. This worked when it came to working with sales and marketing, but then where did departments like finance, IT, HR fit into the product lines?? The company was really structured by departments, so it was best to organize SharePoint by department as well.
While about 90% of companies will be organized by department, I have worked in companies where the business architecture was defined by value stream, so departments actually fell across a value stream. People like purchasing, sales and operations all reported to one value stream or another. So, be sure to ask how the company is organized and mimic this in your enterprise systems like SharePoint.
