We are social creatures and we crave social interaction. This presentation from SPSNYC is about how we build social solutions to our business problems...today.
Digital Workplace in the Connected Organization - Enterprise 2.0Jane McConnell
Scorecards and maturity by industry of digital workplaces from 314 organizations worldwide. Early Adopters versus the Majority. Leading trends: customer focus, working out loud, humanizing the enterprise, new organizational design, the future workplace.
The Digital Workplace in the Connected OganizationJane McConnell
Gave this presentation in a private briefing for a management team in a global company in Europe. It's about the digital workplace and how it's changing processes, practices and roles in organizations.
The workplace in the digital age. How a digital workplace can support business goals and help bring a shared sense of purpose to an organization. Facts and figures from the 2015 digital workplace survey.
What are the future trends in the Digital Workplace? Are we facing even bigger disruption from social, gamification, and the trends that have been prevalent over the last years or are we coming to a point where things are beginning to mature?
Are we making the most of the emergent trends or are we still using the same thinking and logic we did when the Sharepoint 2007 intranet was launched? It's time to challenge ourselves and our peers!
In this presentation I will take you through:
• The characteristics of the Modern Workplace
• What employees are looking for when using digital tools
• Four trends that is shaping the future of collaboration
• (Hopefully) A few new perspectives on new ways of working
With the rate of innovation coming from Microsoft these days, many organizations are struggling to understand which tools and capabilities to use, and when to use them. The fact is: different teams work in different ways. Within the modern digital workplace, there are many different “modalities” of collaboration — and the companies that understand and meet the evolving needs of their end users will have a competitive advantage.
This presentation reprises a keynote presentation given at the European SharePoint Conference (Nov 2016) in Vienna, Austria by Office Server and Services MVPs Christian Buckley from Beezy and Benjamin Niaulin from Sharegate as they discuss real-world scenarios and management considerations of the three primary collaboration modalities: document and process-centric (SharePoint), email-centric (Exchange and Groups), and social-centric (Yammer, Skype for Business) -- and how Beezy can meet the various needs of these modalities.

Planning your Digital Workplace: A Systems-Based Planning ApproachChristian Buckley
When deploying a “Digital Workplace,” where do you begin? What is needed is an iterative, strategic, and systems-based approach of identifying core challenges at the team and company level, working with key stakeholders to identify appropriate strategies, building a solution using a scalable, repeatable, and sustainable change model. This approach drives stakeholder engagement, and ensures a more holistic solution that aligns with the needs of the business at every level. In this presentation, we walk through a systems-based planning approach for Enterprise Collaboration. Topics will include:
--Engaging leaders in a systems analysis, identifying high-priority needs and challenges
--Outlining a set of targeted and strategic actions based on common customer scenarios
--Developing an implementation plan to support successful operational and improvement strategies
The intent of this presentation is to help organizations incorporate systems-based planning into their Digital Workplace planning processes, using real-world customer examples, and to receive tips on how to fold these best practices into their own strategies.
How to get the right Stakeholders involved in your digital workplace initiatives. Input from 5 types of stakeholders, including external customers, is essential for a relevant digital workplace.

The rise of Enterprise Social Networks (ESNs), such as Yammer, Jive, Tibbr and others, have become the hot trend in mid- to large-size organizations seeking better ways to connect employees in real-time, particularly via mobile devices.
A major factor in the need and growth of ESNs at organizations spawns from vast shifts in the way employees now work. With increases in the remote workforce population, from flexible working environments to geographically disparate teams, ESNs help bridge those communications gaps.
This deck is a compilation of a five-part blog series on how to successfully deploy an ESN at your organization.

Modern HR, Communication, & Leadership Best Practices With Microsoft 365Richard Harbridge
Today Intranets are about more than just getting key corporate messaging out. Communications have changed just as IT and HR have changed. Communications leaders have shifted from editors to enablers. Communication leaders are moving from enforcing messaging to empowering and amplifying excellent communications and great ideas throughout the business. Human Resources leaders are shifting from hiring/firing and policy enforcement to performance and engagement. From preboarding to offboarding, HR's challenges are harder today than they have ever been before. Naturally, how these leaders leverage the digital workplace has changed, especially in how they leverage technology to achieve more with less. Join Richard Harbridge, a Microsoft MVP and internationally recognized expert on Microsoft 365 and the Digital Workplace, as he explores ideas and solutions that HR and Corporate Communications have embraced to improve how, where, and when they engage with employees. We will discuss how to best leverage SharePoint, Microsoft Teams, and Yammer for modern communications and take advantage of AI and Microsoft technology to accelerate and improve key communication and content. The technology, best practices, and approach can make all the difference, and it has, for some organizations, led to more significant HR, Intranet, and communications success.

Information Security has traditionally been about controlling the access to data. We build massive and complex network security to ensure that our data is protected.
The problem is that as we become more Cloud based and mobile that Fortress we built around our network has become less effective. 80%+ of hacks are coming from inside of that fortress via phishing style attacks. We need a new approach and new tools to securing our data. This presentation looks at the old way and why it failed, as well as the tools that Microsoft Office 365 and EM-S provide to secure out data in the new world, no matter where it resides.
In todays' world we are always on the go. It might be on a plane to a dozen cities in a month, or it might be on the train into work on a Wednesday. It might be at the ballpark watching your kids play ball, or it might be walking from one conference room to another.
Lucky for us, Microsoft has developed a number of mobile apps that allow us to take out work with us on the go. From OneDrive synching our files to our laptops, to iOS and Android apps, we now have a panoply of options to work on the go.

Security in a Cloud World.
One of the biggest issues with moving to the cloud is the concern for security. How do we protect our information when it leaves the control of our servers and networks? The good news is that Microsoft has been working hard to provide us with tools that allow us to secure our information no matter where it travels, even outside of our network. Find out Microsoft’s approach to security and what tools we have to ensure our information is safe and secure in a cloud first, mobile first world.

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.
"Impact of front-end architecture on development cost", Viktor TurskyiFwdays
I have heard many times that architecture is not important for the front-end. Also, many times I have seen how developers implement features on the front-end just following the standard rules for a framework and think that this is enough to successfully launch the project, and then the project fails. How to prevent this and what approach to choose? I have launched dozens of complex projects and during the talk we will analyze which approaches have worked for me and which have not.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

5. First- What Are We Talking About?
Social Networks in general allow individuals to connect with
information and with other people who share their interests.
These connections occur in an online environment, where
the exchange is often written down and preserved for others
to later discover. Through Social Networks, we are creating a
vast archive of ideas, connections, and conversations.
Enterprise Social Networks yield these same benefits. Within
a closed, private network, employees can create for each
other a vast archive of business ideas, connections and
conversations. Having greater access to information about
their role, their project, and their organization allows
employees to work more efficiently and to innovate more
quickly.
6. Being social is human nature—people have always discovered ways to
connect with each other, share knowledge, make collective decisions,
and collaborate to do big things.
8. Break Those Silos Down
Primarily relying on standalone software
applications and on traditional
communications platforms prevents
information sharing across the
organization.
Traditional systems do not allow you to
tap into tribal knowledge nor to easily
locate expertise across the organization.
By adding a social layer across
standalone software applications, and
by encouraging group communication
primarily through an enterprise social
network, organizations can begin to
breakdown silos.
9. Social capabilities must be a natural part of how we work, seamlessly
woven into the tools you use every day to get your work done. Social
has to be easy, frictionless, and in context.
